Gen 4 Staff Manual (In Japanese) =/ Specs/Design/Other Info

    I don't know what "E" stands for.
    In Japan, a puncture repair kit is standard for all grades, and a spare wheel is optional.
    But, I think the repair kit/spare wheel selection is different among regions.

    There is no information about the battery specifications.
    But, my guess is the battery power numbers of the Li-ion and the NiMH are same.
    Also, I think the 4WD vehicle is chosen in a cold weather region, and the NiMH battery performance is better than the Li-ion at low temperature.
    It looks there is no space difference above the flat cargo floor.
    But, below the cargo floor, the space are different among configurations.
    The total cargo space...
    502L: 2WD without spare wheel
    457L:2WD with spare wheel, 4WD without spare wheel
    Unfortunately, there will be no connection between the navi and the HUD.
    The HUD shows only vehicle information such as speed, HSI and so on.

    The NiMH is also placed under the rear seat.

    Oh no !
    Now that's a real deal breaker for me !
    My gen 3 can show nav Info via HUD so I totally can not understand why they have taken the feature away !
    It's not like they have no idea how to accomplish that .
    Add features yes,take them away no !
    At least not saftey features like this !
    So they pretend being concerned about our saftey by giving us saftey sense,but on the other hand they want to us to be distracted from the road to see nav information ?
    That makes absolutely no sense at all !
    What the hell were they thinking ?
    I will give it a test drive,but it'll better be extremely good for me even considering giving up that fantastic feature !

    Ken are you really sure about this,or did it just not show up in the manual ?
    In that case I still have hope !

    The reduction in overall system power through reductions in ICE power and reductions in MG2 torque (1/5th!) is quite surprising. The ND Miata did something similar, but that was offset with a significant reduction in vehicle mass. This is not the case for 4th-gen Prius, except maybe toa small extent in the "E grade".

    This is not to say that the touted drive train efficiency improvements won't make up for it to maintain current performance levels... but I think we should not expect more "pep" out of the drivetrain. Toyota really was squeezing every last to spec to reach their (apparently difficult-to-attain) efficiency goals.

    What makes me curious about that staff manual is why would Toyota risk the leak of information about the new Prius by handing out these manuals to the dealers after being so secretive so far ?
    They should have known the information would spread,so why didn't they wait until after 29. Oktober ?

    Yes but why should anybody order if the specs of the vehicle aren't supposed to be known yet ?
    Dealer information about the vehicle is only of use if he is allowed to inform customers about it, but unfortunately they aren't to know anything about the cars specs until 29. Oktober .
    I wouldn't pre order a car I don't really know nothing about .
    After all,you are not buying an iPhone for 800 $ it's a car for 25.000 $ !

    The width is reduced...
    Gen3 409mm -> Gen4 362mm

    In the Gen3, the MG1, PSD, reduction gears and MG2 are all inline.
    In the Gen4, the PSD and MG1 are inline, then MG2 is located behind PSD using parallel reduction gears instead of inline planetary reduction gears.

    The new construction is similar to the Ford system below.

    Any info on the improved NiMh? I found nothing on PEVE site. That scan page seem to have some info.

    Does it completely fit under there, or extend some to the rear? Is there structural changes for the AWD?

    Don't have any info on the reduction gear yet?

    It goes on sale in Japan first. Dealers probably will start taking orders soon after the full reveal.

    There is no detail information nor specifications about the NiMH battery, but an illustration of the pack.

    It looks it has 14 modules, maybe they are new design of 9.6V module.

    Anyway...
    battery power = system power - ICE power

    Gen3 battery power = 100kW - 73kW = 27kW
    Gen4 battery power = 90kW - 70kW = 20 kW
    Prius c battery power = 73kW - 54kW = 19kW

    The Prius innovation is reducing battery capacity, but improving the fuel economy value.

    Yes and I would be surprised if it wouldn't go on sale there first,but still considering Toyota making all that fuss about hiding important details of the vehicle,why are they handing out very detailed staff manuals to the dealer more than a month before they wanted to make their big reveal on home soil ?
    I guess the car isn't going on sale the following day of 29. Oktober so they would have plenty of time handing out manuals to their dealers without risking ruining their big surprise !
    I just don't get it !
    If I was head of Toyota and I wanted to keep things secret I certainly wouldn't do it that way !
    So what I am trying to say here and hoping for is,that maybe Toyota hasn't given away everything yet and will still have some surprises up their sleeve when they finally reveal every detail about the car worth knowing !

    Assuming all weights are without spare wheel (standard in Japan) most of the 50 kg difference between the S and the E may have come from battery type which may indicate same capacity with different size and weight?

    Does this manual have any detailed pictures of the AWD rear trans-axle?
    I imagine the extra traction motor for AWD would require deeper cycling of the battery which could explain different battery.
    Also appears that in the US there won't be the same 4 equipment levels with two battery and AWD. There would be too many model combinations to produce and distribute.
