How many EV miles do you get after a full charge now?

It's showing low because the computer uses past driving patterns to estimate EV range. Since the guy never plugged it in, it assumes a low range. I'm sure the battery is fine.

My initial range showed something like 10 miles when I got my 2012 back in Feb. The car sat for a couple months as it sold at auction and was repaired, and then the new owner didn't have the charging cable, so it was driven without charging for a while.

Just a couple days ago the EV range showed 17.3 miles after completing the charge cycle. This is the highest I've ever seen it. My technique for maximizing efficiency is improving.

Use the EV range for short trips, or when the demand for power is very low (near the middle of the HSI power bar).

 

If your climate controls are turned on (fan on), your estimated EV range will be lower (by about 12-13% IIRC).. but like Redpoint said.. its just an estimate based on past driving history.

FWIW, my car shows anywhere from 12.6 to 13.0 EV miles (it will be lower when the temps drop), but last week, I drove the farthest I ever have in EV only.. 15.8 miles.. and technically speaking, I have the oldest PiP of them all

14.2 today - this is probably the "best" time of year out here: warm days, warm nights. It'll go like this until about mid-November.

Too hot - like in July and August - and EV suffers, too cold - like the winter months - and it suffers. 14.2 is about the best that I get at this time of year (small sample size of three years.)

 

At 80000 miles my 2012 PiP still shows the same 10-14 EV miles it's been showing since I got it. I charge roughly twice a day at home and at the office.

 

I also have a 2912 pip and have only gotten to 11 miles as the Hughes range
It varies if I leave it plugged in all night at home I often see 10-11 miles
If I plug in at work for about 3 hora I see about 9-10

 

I get 8.5 to 9 on my hilly, high-speed commute.

 

This analysis is spot on! When I got my car (a lease return) I was showing about 3 miles less on EV than I get now, which is 11.5 to 13.5 miles range (and it keeps climbing) after a full charge, because the previous owner had different driving habits than I. I know that my EV range will increase an additional 1+ miles as soon as this summer heat is over and I no longer need to use the a.c. I have experimented with turning off the a.c. and my HSI will immediately show an additional 1 mile.

 

Same vehicle and with this weather I was getting 10.5, recharging twice a day

 

One thing I was slow to learn is under what circumstances the Prius will allow the gas engine to shut off.

In EV mode, the car will shut off the engine if traveling about 61 MPH or less and not using too much throttle (up to the full EV bar in the HSI)

In HV mode, the car will not shut off the engine unless it is traveling 43 MPH or less and a smaller amount of throttle is used (EV portion of the HSI)

Of course, both scenarios require the engine to be warm before it shuts off, as the engine will run until a specific temperature is reached.

I'm unclear why Toyota choose 2 different thresholds for the engine to be shut down since it requires the driver to be mindful of what mode they are in when attempting to shut the engine off. On steeper downhills, I switch to EV mode when I'm under 61 MPH to kill the gas engine, and then shift to N which allows the car to gain speed beyond 61 MPH and still keep the engine off. After EV range is exhausted and the car is forced into HV mode, I have to slow to 43 MPH to get the car to shut down the engine, which often times is unacceptably slow.

In EV mode, you know the engine is off when EV is displayed. In HV mode, you know the engine is off when the smaller EV indicator is displayed. EV will disappear any time the engine is activated for any reason.

2012 here and I'm up to 29 EV range. Started out new around 13.

On wife's 2012 PiP, our EV miles estimate range (real EV miles are %5 - %10 more when I'm hypermiling) is 8.7 in the cold Syracuse winter and 11.4 in the warm summer.

Just finished a record tank of 2254 miles over 4.5 months with 1782 EV miles (1782 / (382/.85/33.7) = 114.9 MPGe) & 471 HV miles (471 / 7.689 = 61.25 MPG)

Mine shows 9mi, but I have a long freeway commute.
