Considering buying used 2014 Toyota Prius Two

first thing i would do is get my best price on a new one for comparison. if i could get a new one for 22k, i don't think 4k for 40,000 miles and an accident is much of a bargain.

Plus remember toyota is running 0% financing for 60 months on all new Prius, unless your paying cash this can potentially save you $15-$30 bucks a month in interest alone...

 

A new 2015 Two sells for $21743 (including the protection package) around here according to truecar.com. There's a 2014 Two in Reading with 23339 miles for $17488 so the car you are looking at appears to be overpriced.

$7000 buys a lot of gas, repairs, and maintenance. How miles will it take you to recover the difference in operating and maintenance expenses driving the Prius? If you have to borrow the money the trade looks worse.

Uber is going to report your payments to the IRS & EDD and you'll be responsible for the income and employment taxes. You'll also be able to claim the IRS mileage rate for business use of a personal automobile as a business deduction.

You can get a 2015 Prius 2 for 6,000 or so under MSRP. So about $19,500-20,000 + tax tag

And it appears from the ad posted above that it's now 3k off AND special financing aka 0% for 60?

Or is that a Cali deal?

It's doubtful you'll make up the $7000 price difference in fuel costs alone. Even padding in your favor by using $4/gallon fuel and combined EPA instead of highway EPA, you're looking at least 120k miles to break even. I'm willing to bet you're not likely to drive the long distances you commute on a car with >160k miles on it. You're looking at 200k miles break even if you compare highway EPA.

The price you are looking for is around $4000 more than you can get for your Corolla. However, the chances of you finding a low mileage Prius at that price point is nil. I think you can agree a two hour commute in a 51k miles Corolla is preferred over a Prius with 100k miles, long term anyway.

Save your money now and purchase a used 2015 Prius with cash when your Corolla approaches 150k miles in 4 years or so.

 

1. You can get a brand new Prius with 0 down and 0 interest for $22k. Your used 2015 is a horrible deal.
2. Remote start will void your warranty.
3. A free car from your MIL is not free. I know your fiance is not going to listen to me but I'm going to type it anyway. The car will come with strings. My grandma gave me a car when I was 20. It was non-stop, "Take me to buy this or I bought you a car and you never visit." "Or how dare you speak to me this way." It didn't stop until I gave the car back to her. It's one thing if you cannot afford a car. Giving up a free car is just stupid. It's another thing, when you already have a good working 2013 Corolla and you take on the burden of someone who will say you owe them for the rest of your life.

Prius deals come and go. They are usually available with 0% APR in lieu of a cash rebate but occasionally there is a sale where you can get both. That's how you can get a Prius for under $20k. Then Out The Door in CA and you're looking at $22k. I got my 2012 with 0% and some amount of rebate ($1500?) I don't remember. You need to have have good credit for 0 down.

Don't go to Longo Toyota. If they are not the biggest, they are one of the biggest Toyota and Lexus dealers in CA. I've been there. They don't deal. They don't have to. They have the selection and capacity to attract high paying customers. Many here on Priuschat suggest going to Carson Toyota. It's a bit of drive but worth it.

 

You don't need an alarm or remote start for the car. Save your money & put it toward the car.

Since fiance' didn't take care of the first car don't expect the new one to be treated any better.

I agree with mmmodem that getting money from family should only be considered as an absolute last ditch effort. Different story if the in-laws are getting a new car and asking if you want the old one or saying we will spend $20000 for a wedding or you can have the money for a useful purpose (like buying a car).

 

Not sure if you are still looking but I've seen SEVERAL dealers here in Northern California selling Prius II for UNDER $19000, freeman toyota in santa rosa had several for under $18.5K. Most of these even have the floor mats included. These are with the current $3K rebate in lieu of the 0% financing, but I mean most credit unions still have very low loan rates.
