Had a Dodge Ram 3500 attempt to roll coal on me at a stop light yesterday. We were both in front and he was racing his engine creeping forward so his tailpipe would be in front. Obvious what he was trying to do Hit the EV and PWR button when I saw what he was up to and laughed at him in my rear view mirror as I switched into his lane. #epicfail
My Prius (v)agon base has a filter button that works really, really well. I have driven by road construction where asphalt is being burned and not smelled a thing.
Definitely blow his doors off.... He probably did not expect that a Prius would be faster than a big dumb dodge... Fair warning my last car was a 2000 Dodge Stratus...
Best to start the filter before the stink, but I have been late enough times to know that the filtration works excellently to clean up the cabin air too. The carbon air filter may be aiding me here.
I wish other states would pass laws against "rolling coal" like the one in Illinois: In March 2015, Illinois General Assembly Representative Will Guzzardi published a bill proposing to impose a $5,000 fine on anyone who removes or alters their vehicles EPA Emissions equipment. Guzzardi has made it clear that "The fine would come on top of any penalties enforced by the current law that prohibits emissions tampering." Source: Rolling coal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In March 2015, Illinois General Assembly Representative Will Guzzardi published a bill proposing to impose a $5,000 fine on anyone who removes or alters their vehicles EPA Emissions equipment. Guzzardi has made it clear that "The fine would come on top of any penalties enforced by the current law that prohibits emissions tampering." Sounds like a good law to me. You can't take the stand that all laws are bad and take away our rights. This law is good for all except the idiots.
"Had a Dodge Ram 3500 attempt to roll coal on me at a stop light yesterday. We were both in front and he was racing his engine creeping forward so his tailpipe would be in front. Obvious what he was trying to do" Wasn't there, but how was it obvious they were attempting to smoke you? Trust me, if he was in position as you say...or even close...and wanted to...they would have. I know that crowd very well.
Me too, just be careful what you wish for. "Emissions Tampering" is rather vague. There are already states out there that prohibit using non-OEM replacement components, which seems rather punitive to me. Also consider that installing one of those goofy 'fart can' tuner-tips might be considered by some to be emissions tampering. See also: High flow filtering (K$N) Temperature spoofing. Cold intake systems. Coal rolling is pretty low rent, but so are poorly written laws. YMMV.
And really, any reasonable, well-written law would probably still have the effect of including such things. The combination of stuff supplied on your car went through rigorous engineering design to meet certain emission targets. Your state regulating agency can't be in the business of predicting what parts of that you can change without adversely affecting emissions and what parts you can't. (When you read the hype for most aftermarket add-ons, they're basically asking you to believe the manufacturer engineers were sleeping on the job but for $69.99 and two box tops you can fix what they didn't think of, but that just isn't generally the case.) It could be handled with a permit system, like the building codes. You write down what you're going to change and agree that by such-and-such date you'll stop by a testing facility and pay for an emissions test covering all the targeted operating conditions, and when you pass, the permit is signed off and you show it later if anyone questions the mod. -Chap
A diesel truck really isn't that fast, that's not what it was meant to do. A Prius isn't that fast, also not what it was designed to do. However a Prius racing a diesel truck, the Prius usually wins. I've done it many times. I hate driving behind black smoke diesels or even smokers. I can smell a cigarette from an open window 2-3 cars up and it makes my throat hurt. I have no tolerance and will pass. Prius is plenty enough power when coupled with the "element of surprise" (not knowing they were in for a race lol) and then a big truck with tow gearing and a really crappy transmission paired with the static gearing of the HSD.
Sweet! Foiled their plan and embarrassed them in the process. Nicely done. Hopefully they'll realize the stupidity and waste of modifying their truck -- all for nothing.
