Similar but not as severe. $3,150 for Prius vs. $7,500 plus additional state incentives.

Prius was already established prior to the tax-credit being offered. The purpose was to further penetrate the market.

With Volt, it is to establish it... which has been slow and with far from certain results... leading us to wonder what will happen after they expire.

The price without is far from competitive, especially with oil prices expected to remain low and gas supply high.

Prius also benefited from state incentives, along with a tax deduction before the credit. In Japan, it received a subsidy equal to half the price difference between it and an equivalent ICEV when it was first released; followed by further incentives.

The Volt was around $40k when first released. The Cruze, when equivalently equipped with features was around $25k then. A $15k difference which is what $7500 is half of, but being a tax credit, buyers aren't guarranteed to benefit from the full amount as with a direct subsidy.

We U.S, taxpayers have all paid to support the Volt - it called the "bailout of GM". We taxpayers are still supporting the Volt when the Treasury Dept "forgave" and let GM off the hook in the form of "loan forgivness.

Guess who picks up the unpaid tab - you, me, and all U.S. taxpayers.

Except the Volt will be nationwide. GM did the same thing with the Gen 1 Volt.

With the limit to certain states with the PiP, it was like Toyota didn't want to sell them.

The market proved that a wise decision. Waiting can pay off.

That's a lot of inventory to clear out, but consumers will make out well from the steep discounts. Question is, who takes the hit? GM corporate or individuals dealers? Not being profitable has always been a major obstacle to overcome. Gen-1 final sales will remind everyone involved of that.

This one? Prius Plug-in Hybrid Update | PriusChat

There is no announcement on when the next Prius plugin will show up on dealer lots there. We don't even have any official specific details on its specs. We've seen the next Volt and know; the the performance specs, quarter in which it will be released, and even the starting price with delivery.

my point was, both companies have vehicles on the lot to carry the through the change of production. what does it matter that we don't have specs or an official on the lot date for gen IV?

The difference is, GM showed off Gen2 Volt while Toyota is holding it's cards.

Toyota was smart the first round by waiting to see what the market offered and how it reacted. Consumers overwhelmingly prefer to guzzle and the profit clearly isn't there yet.

GM celebrated their victory before rollout even began... hence yet another "over promise, under deliver". The major price drop, repeated inventory pile ups, no demand growth, heavy dependency on incentives, and loss of loyalty upon lease expiration confirms the market is very weak.

It makes no sense rushing Gen-2 announcements.
