That comparison doesn't work, since the current PiP availability is limited to just 15 states.

It was a wise business decision. In such a volatile market, maximizing sales was not a priority. This has been discussed in great detail on numerous other threads.

Take a look in 2014 at any particular state in witch the PiP is selling and you will find out that Volt is taking the lead.
Probably not the best car but the best $7,500.00 credit incentives and EV range

What conclusion can you draw from this regarding the antisipated selling numbers of the G2 Volt compared to the (no specs known) G2 PIP?

If you got state sales data. let me see it. There is no public state-by-state sales data to my knowledge. All we have is total USA sales and we know how many combined PHEV are sold in California. Toyota had huge PiP sales thru June_2014 and then the supply dried up for whatever internal reason Toyota stuffed the supply since August 2014. Right now Volt production is being stopped due to lack of sales and excess supply. PiP sales are low due to no cars to sell (see InsideEV's monthly report).

II mean if folks want a Volt its OK by me ...I do feel GM carved out a nice space for itself in the quality/batt size/range. Personally I am with John more aligned with Prius and plug-in-lite concept, which is also a good space as far I am concerned.

So, the ELR is being discontinued!

2016 Chevrolet Volt will not be sold anywhere else outside of North America! 2016 Chevrolet Volt Will Not Be Sold In Australia

And the trade offs for the extra EV range Are?

A few weeks ago I posted about Li battery legal issues, having to do with dueling patents and some patents GM is using in USA but not covered outside USA very well. So I don't know if thats part of it.

GM announced the ELR was going to be a limited production run when it went on sale. It was a quick fix to try and save sales lost to Tesla. They knew by the time it got close to release it won't be enough. So the cancellation comes as no surprise.

The new full size Cadillac sedan, the CT6, will have a PHV option.

The Volt and Pruis PHV haven't sold well in Europe or elsewhere because of a high price that is further increased by import tariffs. The PPI hasn't even been introduced in Australia yet, Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid not for Australia until 2015. The taxes for Japanese imports have been reduced or eliminated in Australia recently.

Let's not forget about the recently expired NiMH patents.

No longer having those restrictions will obviously have a positive impact on the regular Prius.

Of course, that likely played a big role in the delay of Gen-4 rollout.

Agree! I think the delay was about new tech testings, not styling.

The ELR will be discontinued, but after it's series run. It will still get updates in features and technologies.

if those are the numbers you aspire to, why bother? there's no point to two volts. if you want volt ev distance, prius cabin space and 50 mpg, you better have your wallet at the ready.:p

    The simple answer is yes:
    • minimize rolling drag - low weight, high pressure tires, low-rolling resistance tires
    • minimize aero drag - no grills, laminar flow after peak cross-section, bottom panel, wheel-well tricks
    • minimize overhead - efficient power electronics and motor(s), lights, heating and cooling
Then there are the technical characteristics of battery chemistries, a whole other thing.

^^^what I am saying though Bob, do you think Bolt is NiMH (not Li)? That would be radical thought.

FYI...It has been "vented" by informal sources that only the USA model will end production.
For a "quick" retooling or line management issues, PHV production will resume with the remaining (European/Japanese) specs.
