Deduct for DC to AC conversion, plus non-ideal roof orientation & the like, and after all subtractions, the system's output is thus oficially rated at 7.1kW's ... mind you, that amount only hits for short periods during longer summer days ... but I guess the 'theoretical high' output for a few moments is considered a system's rating.

How does NJ handle property tax for 'improvements' ... favorably? Some states/counties base property taxes on values of improvements. So far, Calif isn't jacking up property taxes - but who knows - maybe in the future ...

 

Probably against the public policy encouraging renewable energy.

 

Increases in real estate property taxes in California are limited to 2%/yr by Proposition 13. But on sale, the property is reassessed at market value. Even suggesting changing this is a kiss of death for California politicians.

 

Actually, any capital improvement (remodeling, etc.) also triggers the assessed value to go up by the cost of those improvements. It does not trigger a complete reassessment, just tacks on the improvements' value to the existing value.

It's very nice. Gas would have to be less than like 50 cents to match what you're saving with solar. Of course here's the dillema - you don't charge you save energy toward the house. But then on average, if you do charge you save versus using regular gas

 

Yes - one can get pretty philosophical on using PV. I had a fellow say we're stupid for having a system so large that it puts thousands of surplus kWh's on the grid. His rationale is that a system is 'best' - when it's so small, all it does is knock off top tier rates, which in our case, were 5X higher than baseline rates. That rational says your system's payback comes 5X quicker. But our plan is for a 2ND plugin eventually - which will ALSO cost zero for fuel. In the mean time, the utility pays us a pittance for our surplus.

After our solar installation I wish we had a larger system (though not possible at the time considering we picked the most efficient system on the least amount of roof). I'm even thinking down the road we completely offset our usage and we get our credits for electricity. That would be swell.

Yes surplus could go to the grid, but that's peer-to-peer solar generation right there, or even energy generation. No longer do we truly have to rely on one source or one area. Everyone can contribute and that's a good thing.

You will get the PIP 4th Gen which will require more KWh stored. You will also get the plugin Prius V 7 seater there - now all is covered efficiently.

Don't worry about the silly grid-tied solar question. Any solar panel is GHG reducing. Charge your car whenever. Think of the grid as a battery.

There are used iMiEV's, Leaf's and even some Spark EV's (400 ft/lb torque!) out there.
If you need one car that can do it all there are really cheap used Volts also.
