I thought and thought.. then caved in to do this rear wiper delete mod. guess i'll have to suck it up during Chicago winters. happy nonetheless. thx to @tweldon2 for the plastic plug and @ncases for some tips on what to do. Glossed it black to match a bit better.


and finally, I had some time to paint today. I did the lug nuts black and calipers green. Thx to @J Dunn for some suggestions on how to do it. I tried to make the lugs green too, but it was too much. I like to keep my green accents subtle.

I had to move the cars to our backyard for a family gathering this evening. When cleaning up I snapped a pic of mine and my wife's cars next to our blooming dogwood. Beautiful!

 

Last week I added a layer of MLV/CCF to the floor. This weekend I applied MLV/CCF to the rear cargo area. I think so far I've added about 40 pounds of sound deadener/barrier materials to the PIP.

Because I was dealing with smaller pieces of MLV for this section of the car, it was somewhat easier. But, because there are so dang many compound curves, it took forever to do a decent job. I spent tons of time making templates from newspaper and cheap foam before cutting into the MLV; then more test fitting and fine tuning with the MLV pieces before finally cutting and contact cementing the CCF to the MLV and placing the pieces into the car.

I applied a couple pieces of dynamat xtreme on the vertical sheet metal near the fuel filler. On the passenger side, I didn't because Toyota already installed a fairly large piece of their damping stuff near the plug in "hatch".

I ran out of CCF as I was working on the wheel wells and was only able to do the rear halves of the wheel wells. Probably not a big deal because the front half of them is covered in wiring and the MLV would not get a tight fit anyway. When I remove the headliner later to work on the roof, I will fit MLV to the front part of the wheel wells. Oh... that is because to get the headliner out, you have to remove pretty much all of the lower interior panels.

A quick test with my android sound meter showed an additional 3db decrease from doing the floor and cargo area on my usual stretch of concrete freeway at 65 mph. With the doors (dynamat, Frost King and adtl sound absorber), I also got a 3Db reduction.

Would I do this to the floors and cargo area again?
No way, it was too big a PITA and too time consuming.

To those considering sound deadening/proofing their Prii, I recommend doing only the doors, unless you really want to get to know your car intimately by stripping its interior.
Doing the doors was relatively inexpensive, easy and the benefits of a 3Db noise decrease and "solid" doors were a nice add to my user experience.

This week, I plan to add an MLV layer to the front doors, to see how much improvement MLV provides over the Frost King that I used earlier. I expect it will be quieter with an MLV layer in certain conditions such as when you're driving next to a 4x4 with noisy tires, but I won't be surprised if the sound meter doesn't register much of a decrease on my usual test run.

Here is a pic of the "spare tire tub" area, the PIP Li-Ion battery and some of the Frost King that I tried earlier. You'll also see a piece of 1/8" rubber material that I used for testing (because I already had it on hand) whether I wanted to take the leap to MLV. By the way, that thick rubber material is smelly, I had originally bought it for making an engine splash guard for my old jeep and didn't notice how nasty the rubber smelled until I tried it inside the PIP. Peee ewwww!!!

For others like sfprankster who have used Frost King - you will be happy to know that FK adhesive sticks very well to the sheet metal and was somewhat a challenge to remove cleanly.




Frost King is gone and the first piece of MLV/CCF barrier is down. It's a start...

Wheel wells took forever to template and final-fit. Newspaper is a lot cheaper to make mistakes with than MLV.




Finally...

 

So I finally installed my PIAA 400hz/500hz sport horns yesterday. It was 70 here! What a beautiful day! I bought the horns before delivery of the car . The same horns are on my Prius v, which sound soooo much better than the meemp meemp stock horns.

I ended up removing the two bolts and multiple fasteners on the top/front to get a bit of working room from the top which made the install much easier, still not as easy as on the v. I also made a small jumper since the stock connection was a little short.

All went well...until the end. I fumbled one of the bolts and dropped it through to the bottom shield Since the bolt was black on the black shield I couldn't see it from the top and/or possibly rolled some where out of sight. I can't really get under the car at the moment to try to hunt it down.

So two questions- does anyone know what size that bolt happens to be- I know it's 12mm top, but not sure how long it is, and I put it back together without measuring it, easy enough to pull apart again but if anybody knows that saves me a few minutes. How bad would it be to leave that bolt down on the shield and just buy a new one to replace it? Is that just asking for trouble in the future with the bolt possibly bouncing around?

I'd head to the local hardware store with a ratchet/socket and match the remaining bolt to one in the bins/drawers and replace it.

I'd imagine the bolt will eventually fall out of the panels when driving around

 

Get a magnet stick and search with that. They come in handy

Just got the call that she is all done.

Roof was wrapped in gloss black, taillight tint removed (too damn dark), and redo of both front windows as slight vertical gap next to the pillar.

Walking cross town shortly to pick her up… pics to follow...
