How long does a full tank of gas last for you?

That's because our cars have just under 2 gallons of fuel remaining in the tank once the miles remaining hits 0. In essence it's a fail safe so you fill up early and don't run the tank dry.

In reference to why your actual calculated mpg is lower than the computer displayed mpg, that's just the ways our cars are. I have seen a low variance of 5% off and as high as 9%. My last 2 tanks in the warmer weather has yielded 6% and over the winter the average was 7%. FYI.

 

Interesting. Where did you get this information regarding how much fuel is remaining? And so which would you say is more accurate, the mfd or manual calculation?

 

It is a known fact on this fourm about the 1.9 gallons remaining. Has been discussed for years.

And manual calculations are def the correct way to get an accurate mpg tank by tank. But we know that the displayed is approx 2.5-3mpg high on average so it's an ok way to get a quick assessment of what your actual mpg is.

Ie. 48mpg on dash is approximately 45.5-46mph calculated.

The proper way to calculate mpg is to fill your tank and stop when it clicks. Reset the trip A or B (I personally always reset trip A from tank to tank and never touch trip B which is my lifetime mpg) drive till whenever you feel the need to fill up and divide the miles driven by how many gallons were pumped and that's that. Rinse and repeat. Fuelly is neat too, I have been meaning to open an acct and I will eventually as I have every gas reciept saved with all the calculations and variances, etc.

 

Thanks for the clarification. I've been a forum member for a while, but it would literally take forever to read each and every thread in every sub-forum! Do you know how much is left after the last "pip" flashes? I can't remember if that coincides with the miles remaining hitting zero. I'm assuming the pip begins flashing well before miles remaining hits zero. What this all seems to convey to me is that you can typically assume that once it's hits zero remaining that you should have at least 70-100 miles left before fuel runs out, depending on your average MPG. Would this be a fair assumption?

You should have 70 (if you drive like mad) up to 100+ miles till empty once you hit zero miles remaining.

I just filled up today and my last pip started flashing around 30 miles remaining if I recall correctly.

It's kinda funny that I can commute to work for a couple day on empty! Couldn't say the same about my old Hemi. Lol.

 

Even knowing above info I typically fill up either when the last pip starts flashing or when I hit 0 miles remaining.

I did push it once on my second tank ever just to see, well also to make it to Delaware to get the cheaper gas.

This was last fall and I made it to something like 530 miles (I have a Persona w/ 17's) and that was the closest to being empty I've ever been. Have never ran out of gas... Yet.

 

the owners manual states the amount of emergency fuel.

 

I couldn't get myself to do it, the range was already at 0 for this tank. Weather is getting a bit warmer, aiming for that 500 club.

 

But according to this website(fuelly.com) I got 7% less than what the vehicle says. I don't do much city driving or hwy driving. My average speed is what's posted above. When I drive in the city my mpg increases, but I barely drive in the city or hwy. My average speed is between 9 and 15mph. 356.9 is all I got out of her. It lasted 3weeks though. I'm on my second tank now since I bought her. I should see a increase. I'm getting better numbers than the 39.1 posted . I'm at 41.4 right now. It goes up to 42 and 43mpg when the motor kicks on.

 

Yeah I usually get a good 23-30 days between fill-ups. Sure beats the semi-weekly trips to the pump when I had my Honda CRV.

 

For me, I drive a lot. And I do mean, too much. I get about ~500 miles per tank; I have to fill up 1 x per week at about $30/tank. This week, due to a change in work location and requirements on driving, I will probably not need to fill up till next week. However, if I just drove to and from my office - and not anywhere else, I would have to fill up 1-2 x per month.

 

I'm trying to keep my annual mileage under 10k. My daily average is about 24 miles, so that translates to about 8,750 miles, or well under my goal. Funny that my first Prius was a 2004 that had almost 77k miles on it when I bought it. That was in 2008 and I paid 19k, but after taxes and reg it was close to 21k! That was back when we could drive in the diamond lane, and prices for the Prius were at a premium. I remember they couldn't keep them on the lot, new or used. So this time around I got a 2011 with only 32k, in much better condition, for about 5k less. I racked up a LOT of miles on my first Prius, selling it with about 159k miles. Based on my average daily miles it would take five years just to match the initial mileage my first Prius had when I bought it!

 

I generally get between 480 and 525 out of a tank. My goal is to hit the elusive 600. I think I can do it this summer.
