An unbelievable thing happened the other day. I was at a box store the other day looking for a box to ship stuff in. There were 3 twenty-something employees. Two white boys and a Hispanic girl all attentive and nice. I asked to see some large boxes and they brought out one that was 24X18X18 inches and proceed to open it up.
I then asked if they had a square one. One of them said " No, but we have one that's 24X24X24. So I said, "Okay, that's square enough".
After both boxes were opened I asked them "What's the volume of the boxes?". All of them had a blank face and looked at me so I said "I mean the volume of the boxes".
One of them answered "I'm sorry sir, I don't understand your question, but this one's 24X18X18 and this one's 24X24X24"
Now I had a blank face and my jaw dropped slightly. so I said "just multiply the dimensions and divide by 144 " to which there was no reaction. I pulled out my iPhone and gave them the answer. I should have got the hint when they said they didn't have a square one.
I have heard that California has a miserable rating for students on math tests but this proves its true. I'm sure computers do all the math but simple arithmetic should still be learned. If this is the future, I'm glad I won't be here when these people come into power.

Multiplying the three dimensions for each box will give the volume in units of cubic inches. Dividing that by 1728 will convert to cubic feet. I'm assuming he meant to say that.

Yes, that was my assumption too. I just couldn't let the 144 go by without a hilarious 144-based comment.

A customer, out-of-the blue, asks you to come up with the volume of two boxes. I can think of a few thoughts that mighta been running through their minds. ;)

"I'm sorry, sir, did you 'square'? Most of the boxes we carry are three dimensional. Here's one that's two feet on each side. Will that do?" ;)

There's no 'math' to have trouble with. It's two feet, cubed. Makes 8 cubic feet. :)

I thought they were thinking of the volume of the BGM in the store. That's why I said "I mean the volume of the boxes".

My daughters love One Direction, often referred to as "1D".

I reckon you could fit loads of 1D stuff in Speedeamon's 2D box.
