here's a picture of a hit-and-run in a New Jersey parking lot. My guess is that it was a tow hitch that did the harm.
Maybe it was better that you weren't there... no need to get involved in homicide! Some fine citizen backed into and scraped my rear bumper last week (without leaving a note)- I'll have to get it repainted in the spring. It hardly pays to have a nice car nowadays.
That is among the reason I want 24/7 surveillance in my car. I almost feel like less than half of people leave notes nowadays, and that has to change. There is no integrity anymore. That said, last year I was in a Chinese restaurant eating a meal and a woman was walking to each table asking if they drove a blue Acura. She got to my table and asked if I drove a blue Acura, and I said "no, mine is grey" (it was night time). She told me she might have ran into my car while she was backing up. I went outside and she confirmed that it was my car she had backed into. I looked at the bumper where she said she hit it and really didn't see anything other than a small scratch that might have already been there anyhow. I thanked her for her honesty and told her not to worry about it.
OP: You may want to consider having this damage repaired without filing an insurance claim. In addition to having a claim on your record, Carfax will flag your car as having been wrecked if you file an accident claim. Presuming you're smart enough to sell your car privately instead of trading it in, many times telling the prospective new owner that you got backed into in a parking lot is preferable to seeing ****ACCIDENT!!!**** in a report. Your call. I'm sorry about the hit. I hope that there's no mechanical damage.
Thanks, but I already made the insurance claim. I will keep carfax in mind if there is a next time. And, yes, fortunately, there was no altercation and no mechanical harm. Thanks for thoughts on the bright side.
I would think this could be repaired for about the same amount as the deductible, but the OP says it has already gone to claim. Interested to see how much they appraise the damage at.
Re Carfax, Maybe not; here's an article I found when researching after my wife kissed the side of the garage with our Lexus and did some minor damage. I didn't report it to our insurance company and wondered if the VIN in the body shop records would show up on Carfax. How Carfax works, and why you should take it with a grain of salt
Sorry to see that happen to anyone. Did you know there are dash cams that will record even when you are not in the vehicle? Check out BlackVue 500 series. They have a battery status sensor to keep from running it down to where the vehicle won't start. I don't use it on my Prius, but my son does with his Jeep which is parked on the street all the time.
The damage included part of the ac system,so the cost exceeded my deductible easily. I am paranoid about where I park now. Glad to have it back.
