So now I make a post into a thread to see if I can 'opps' take it out.

Answer: No. I can edit the content to make it 'null' but there does not appear to be a way to delete one's post except by petitioning the moderators.

This was just a test . . . had it been a real emergency, I would have reported myself.

I suspect we would have some strange looking threads where the first OP in a thread was self deleted, followed by a few responses to... nothing. ;) :D

We used to allow that, but too often someone would stalk away in a tiff and delete all their posts. We would restore them, but it was a huge PITA and took hours to do. In particular, deleting the first post in a thread really makes the entire thread unreadable. It is pretty shocking how immature people can be at times.

No problem. New software, regression testing.

Things have changed.......at least with SOME forum software.

The ones that allow deletes have restrictions, like: You can't delete a post if there are replies AFTER it........or if it has been 8 hours or more since it was posted. Some of the ones with restrictions like that apply the same rules to editing too........for obvious reasons, if you think about it a bit.

If I can go back and delete all of the text within a post, that is little different than deleting the post itself.
IIRC, there are no restrictions on editing here so one could wreak havoc by going back and changing what he "said" days later.

Ability to edit the title would be nice. Why have typos immortalized ?
And additional clarity is always welcome.

Maybe just allow appending to a post after a certain amount of time? That allows for adding updates or clarifications without wholesale deleting or changing the meaning of an old posting.

I checked the first post on a thread I originated, and just under the right side of the thread title is a dropdown menu "Thread tools", which has an option "Edit title". I tried it on my outage post from 3/1 and was able to change the title.

    Old problem:
If I accidentally start a reply, there is no "abort" option.
Then if I exit wrong, it is posted anyway.
THEN I can't delete it once it is posted.

    Royal pain in the backside.

Posts are dated though so we'll know if it's edited days later.

Just erase everything in the reply box (on Windows I use Control-A then Delete) and go to another screen.
With a completely empty reply box, if you try and post it you'll get this message and the system won't let you continue:

    The following error occurred:

    OK so here's my problem:
I don't understand why the authors and owners of the software can spend their time and money making things look "pretty" when they can't or won't spend some time killing these annoying little "bugs".

The biggest part of customer service is LISTENING to your customers comments and complaints and then doing something about it.
I don't remember hearing ANYBODY clamoring for a different/better "look and feel".

Danny is really at the mercy of the XenForo software designers. With almost any commercial program, in order to get bug fixes you have to upgrade to the latest release, which will almost certainly have "enhancements" that you may or may not want (not to mention new bugs). From the developers' point of view, they have to keep updating the application to stay competitive - there are several other companies selling forum software.
And I'm sure if you look at the XenForo forum there are many more feature request (and probably bug reports) than they can possibly deal with in a reasonable time, so the software is always evolving.

I see almost 47,000 messages in their Suggestions forum, another 32,000 in Solved Bug Reports, and 202 in Future-Fix Bug Reports:
    XenForo Community

Not making excuses; as a (mostly custom) software developer myself since the late 1970s, I just know how things work.

For some things, sure but not for others.

So let's ask point blank......so we know who to yell at.........is allowing a user to delete his own posts a standard option available in this software or not. I assumed that it WAS and the "management team" is just being stubborn.
