M85 Fuel

    There is a new fuel coming out here in Florida called EcoFlex96. Its 85% methanol and 14% gasoline. It is certified by the EPA to give you 10% more power and MPG. It is also cost's a lot less than gasoline.

    Has anyone else heard of this? BTW, it also is certified to reduce CO2 by 70+%.

    U.S. Energy Initiatives Explains Singular 96â„¢ Brand -- SANTA CLARITA, Calif., June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- states they were trying to sell this stuff in Canada in 2012.

    The product is also supposedly certified for sale in California.

    In my opinion, companies trading on pink sheets are little more than scams. Some two years later and I can't find a link where the product can be bought. The only people that are going to profit from this venture are the original principals.

    Can methanol be used as a fuel? Yes. Are there enough FlexFuel vehicles on the road in a given location to make distribution of the product competitive with gasoline? I don't know. Can this company make a profit producing, marketing or selling the fuel? No.

    Just exactly WHERE did you get this pathetically incorrect information ?? Where ever it was, you should stop reading stuff there........or at least stop passing it along as though it is truthful.

    I do not think that changing the liners in underground fuel tanks is a "relatively small" task.

    The statements about it giving better mileage are also blatantly untrue.

    This has been studied for YEARS by a multitude of scientists and it just doesn't appear to be practical or economical. Anyone who is representing it as an emerging industry is just perpetrating a scam.

    FYI, I had this fuel in my 370Z and its amazing. I was just wondering if anyone else ever used an M85 fuel.

    Its already approved for Florida.

    The article you mention was written by a person shorting the stock. He even say's it in the article.

    That's interesting I did not know Methanol was close to being offered in FL and CA.

    ...sounds like we have a discrepancy in the MPG information. Generally with alcohol you get way less MPG than gaso, so you need to burn a lot more, so on that basis it could be more expensive per mile than gasoline. And Jimbo's article says M85 is way less MPG than gasoline, as we might expect. However, the marketing claims are that it makes better MPG...this is the issue in our discussion. I don't see how the claim makes any sense except I realize you can re-design a car engine for methanol fuel to run better MPG. But nobody has a methanol car.

    The biggest benefit could be cheaper than gasoline, at the inconvenience of more frequent fill-ups. but at the current gaso low prices, not sure. They are a day late and a dollar short, unless the price of gaso goes back up.

    I'm not suggesting that you take my word on it but it has been tested by the EPA and they said it gives 10% better milage. As I have said, I have tried this in another one of my cars and it does work. I was just wondering what Toyota's take on this was.

    The manual says not to use any fuel with more than 15% ethanol. If you want to use fuel with 85% ethanol, then feel free to try it at your own risk. Some members on here have used it, though not long term as far as I'm aware and they all seem to be in warm States where cold starting isn't a particular issue.

    Why not be the Guinea Pig? But on your head be it (y)

    1) good because until you give a baseline, we can't even guess what 10% better means. 10% better than the 70% worse that science predicts 85% methanol/15% gasoline will get? 10% better than 100% methanol?
    Energy density - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia hints that M100 gets 1/4 the MPG that gasoline does.

    2) Work as in did not immediately fail? Work as in you drove it 200,000 miles?

    3) No one from Toyota posts here. Very occasionally some one from US Toyota Marketing will post, but they know less about cars or science than you or I.

    And the quote you provided is NOT biased in any way.................give us a break.

    Specifically it claims an increase in mileage where the accepted science concludes exactly the opposite......by a wide margin.

    Why are you so hyped up on this anyway ?

    I have some ocean front property for sale in Arizona too.

    No "the EPA" said no such thing.
    At best, an independent lab said that.
    At this point, all we know for sure is that YOU said that.
    If we believe you, then all we know for sure is that the company promoting M85 said it.
    We don't know for sure that claim is anywhere close to being true.

    So where did you manage to get the "M85" that you used ?

    And I suggest that anybody else who is tempted to get on this bandwagon check with your car maker before trying it out.
    IT IS ONLY APPROVED FOR FLEX FUEL VEHICLES......and there is no guarantee that it is safe to use it in all of them.

    I've been talling people for a few months now that $2 gas isn't especially 'cheap' nor will it substantially hurt hybrid sales.
    If there are still people out there tinkering with stuff like this - that rather proves the point, now doesn't it? :D

    I'll stick with regular old Regular, thanks.
    The meth-heads are wrong about the 10-percent increase in fuel efficiency unless this last DST change also changed the world of math.

    Technically speaking I believe some Prius owners use E85 with some modification of the fuel system. It would be an open question if M85 could be similarly used (voiding warranty of course) or would require a little different set up. I am thinking there is an E85 kit or something like that.

    M85 is 85% Methanol 15 gasoline, E85 is 85% Ethanol 15% gasoline.
    Both Methanol and Ethanol are Alcohols.
