Just put the McDonough fog light kit in my PC2...awesome kit!! My PC 2 had the wires already ran for factory install...but I ran with the harness that came with the kit. The kit was delivered to my door for $170.28 and thet came with 55w H-11 bulbs

 

Hi. I have the fog lights installed. I connected them to the existing wiring behind the front bumper. How do I know which two wires to tie in to at the fuse box now?

For tapping the connector wires, take out the connector and pull it towards you. I also unwrapped some of the electrical tape. You want to tap the thicker of the two purple wires and the pink wire of the same size.

 

Be careful not to use the fogs with high beams. It's illegal in almost every state. And it's not legal for the fogs to be operable independently of headlights as well. Jus' saying'...

Which fuse box?

Ok. I'm just going to post how I'd like the fog lights to run, where I'm at, and I'm hoping someone with a far better understanding of the preexisting wiring in the car can help me out.

Mine is a 2013 C2. I have the fog lights in the bumper and hooked into the existing harness there. I also have a fog switch that we put in on the dash next to where you adjust the dash light brightness. The switch is OEM from a Yaris. (I'll post a picture of what and where for clarification in a few.)

How I want the fog lights to run is independently and with the control of the switch. I don't want their power dependent on the headlights.

My foglights don't run independently of the headlights, so hopefully someone else can help you out with that issue.

 

Thanks! I think that most vehicles are wired that way, to have the operation of the fog lights contingent on powered on headlights. I've overriden this on two other vehicles, an IS300 and a WRX, but they both had factory fog lights from the jump. I'm adding the fog lights to the Prius and then trying to do this, so it's unfortuntaely more complicated. I'll look at those instructions again and may just try to get them working with the headlights for now and deal with the independent operation and switch later.

 

Samantha, in the linked instructions, step 16 and 17, one of those wires tapped will be hot (+12v) when the car is in Ready Mode and the other wire tapped will be hot only when the headlights are on. Figure out which one is hot when in Ready Mode, headlights off, then tap both wires to that. That way you get what you want, foglights that work independently of the headlights.

 

Followed kwhubby's instructions, as well as suggestion from xliderrider above. Wound up running one of the two blue wires to the switch, which allows fog lights to operate independently. They do require at least power to the parking lights, though. If my stalk is switched only to the "DRL" option, there is no power to my switch or my fog lights.

In other news, my "Past Record" has disappeared from my main display screen! No idea why. Was thinking it was because we touched the ECU, but the last price for gas that I put in is saved. Not sure where the Past Record even went. It's not like it's there but erased. It's not even viewable as an option on the display menu.

And by the way, thanks, guys. No way that we would have figured any of this out without the helpful posts in this thread.

Just read in manual that it is in fact because power from battery was disconnected, in case anyone else loses their info. and is concerned.

Here's a new problem... I am using a switch that's apparently common to the one that is included in aftermarket kits for the Yaris. It's by Amico, and I purchased it through Amazon.

I have it wired up and working, but the amber light cuts out after being on for several minutes. The red light that indicates when the switch is "on" operates just fine. I think the switch is overheating and tripping itself. There are no problems with the fog lights themselves running.

Ordered an OEM Toyota switch that's rated at 21A and 14V. If that works without problems, I'll know that the switch just wasn't strong enough.

You should be using the switch to control a relay, very low current (miliAmps) through the switch, not running the full power of the foglight circuit through the switch (Amps).

 

I have the fogs wired through the power to parking & headlights. I can hear a relay click when I turn them on. Do I need an additional relay?

If you are drawing power from the headlight circuit to power your foglights, then yes, you need another relay.

The foglights should be getting their power from the battery or the engine fuse box buss, which gets power from the battery. I suggest you Google the use and function of automotive relays. You use the relay as a switch to control the flow of power from a power source (battery) to a load (foglights).

You control the relay, in your case, by tapping into another circuit (headlight or other +12v source) and put the dash switch on that control circuit, not the power circuit previously discussed above.

So in simpler terms, the relay is a heavy duty switch with two circuits. One is the load circuit, the other is the coil or control circuit, the one that determines whether the relay will be On or Off, or in relay speak, open or closed.

 

Short answer---yes.

The relay that you hear is probably the headlight switch relay. When you turn the headlights on with your steering column headlight switch, it sends a small amount of current (that the switch is capable of handling) to the relay. The relay connects the high amperage (that the relay is designed to handle) to the headlights.
You need the same setup for your fog lights, regardless of your power source.

Doesn't have to be Toyota, any Bosch type automotive relay, of 30 or 40 amp rating will do. You want an SPST (single pole single throw) normally open type relay.

Any autoparts store or electronic supply chain has them.

xlider is correct. Just make sure you put in a quality relay. Some from China ain't so good.
