The first successful bouncing bomb in World War 2 did damage to the dam. The Germans frantically tried to repair the damage. They knew if the British came back to finish the job the next day it would result in a disaster for them. Fortunately for the Germans, the British did not come back the next day.

Actually, I read that it's because of the shape of the human skull which acts as an amplifier, boosting the signal slightly. That's why sending the signal through your head allows the signal to travel a little further as opposed to simply pointing at your car.

And I'm of the "lock your doors, don't have any valuables showing in car". A few years ago when I was working at Home Depot I was running late to work and forgot to lock my door. Sure enough when I got off work that night, my car stereo had been stolen. And because I had to park really far away from the cameras, we couldn't see who did it. Plus there are a lot of pickup trucks and vans, so it's easy for one to pull up to block the view from the camera.

Yeah, it was a target of opportunity due to my carelessness. But ever since then, I always make sure my car is locked, even if I'm only going to be gone from my car briefly aside from inside my garage. If a thief sees something valuable they can swipe, I'm sure they won't have any qualms about busting a window to grab it if they think they can get away with it, so better not to tempt them in the first place.

On a related note, about a year back when I had a prius c, I had my sister help me test what would happen if I left the car running while taking the key fob with me. We found out that you can still drive the car without the fob in the car it if it wasn't turned off, though the prius does initially whine/beep that the fob isn't in the car.

Gregp507 writes it also works with the lock/unlock buttons. I believe something increases the signal strength. I wish I knew, but I don't. Maybe someday an Einstein type guy will buy a Prius and explain to us why it works.

For those that are not familiar with the bouncing bomb it was invented by a British inventor that originally was considered as a nut case. The way the bomb worked was the same way a flat stone works in the water. You throw the flat stone in a still pond and it skips in the water. When a bouncing bomb hits a dam it can do tremendous damage.

I am not disputing whether it works in the panic button or unlock/lock buttons. The only interest I have in why it works in either and I am sure it does.

Which was the nutcase? The bomb or the inventor?

It doesn’t take Einstein type of a guy. I already gave very short explanation in this topic that water in you is conductor and acts as antenna. A bit longer explanation would be that if key is just as is signal has to go from it directly to air. If you put it against your (main) body signal goes directly into it. Your body has more surface area than the key itself so signal can get to air more easily. Also it can use your body and cavities in it as resonant chamber and that will amplify the signal even more.

D'oh! How could we not have thought of something so simple?

There is a discovery by two chemists called cold fusion. The scientists suspect how it works, but are not 100% sure they are correct. Until they do business can't profit from it. A cold fusion car would get better mileage than a full tank of gasoline in a regular car simply by putting a gallon of water in the tank. I doubt the powers that run the place would ever allow it now because it would upset the financial apple cart. The problem with cold fusion now is they are not able to make cold fusion work 100% of the time. Toyota put the two chemists on the payroll, but for now they are concentrating on a hydrogen car.

When I see someone making a buck on it I will know this phenomenon is fully understood.

    Probably, both!

There are 4 or 5 versions on this page that explain how it works.. When all of us agree on one version and there is not one to challenge us than I will believe in that version.

I read about that in Popular Science and tried it and quite frankly, it didn't work. Maybe my brain is too dry.
