The problem is the Kelly model has only two independent inputs: miles per year and finance. My true costs:
    • Both Prius are paid-off - no finance, no future payment.
    • Both Prius have liability only - because they are paid off.
    • My mileage, ~18,000 miles in town and ~2,000 miles highway
    • Both Prius are returning 52 MPG each year, the 2010 at 5 mph faster
The model 'frames' the results and sad to say, the Kelly model is too shallow. For example, they use "5 years":
    • 10 years - 2003 Prius, still running
    • 6 years - 2010 Prius, still running

No disagreement here their calculator is rather limited. AND everyone's situation is different so you make adjustments accordingly.

The insurance on my "C" is low, but if it were my daughter's car it would have been x3+ of that. $100-150/mo more in insurance makes all gas savings irrelevant.

Of course it is still relevant. When I tell the folks that now that gas has gone down, I am now only paying $25 to fill up once every two weeks!
    They just groan.
Here in the Hudson Valley of NY, there seem to be more and more popping up all over the place. And whenever I park in a parking lot somewhere, it seems that the car that pulls in next to me is a Prius!
I believe that Toyota hit it big with this one, and it's not going away any time soon.

Yeah, yeah, except the Prius liftback is currently being outsold in US by Dodge Dart and Kia Soul. Woo. Hoo.

Yeah I guess so: It's still selling and still being picked on: last night Ch2 replayed Modern Family, Cam and Mitchell's wedding, showing Nathan Lane and the other 3 shooing butterflies going down the road in White prius. Then there was the Prius v with 'just married' painted on the back by two male youths and sister videoing them saying 'I can't get enough of this'.
Hey, I didn't make the episode, never seen it before, justa preview last year (?). Seen Prius picked on in other movies too, the one with Wahlberg and Ferrel IIR.

Hopefully Prius will get past that soon enough.
