2Fas, how much did you get for the 2012 Prius from the dealer ?

I have to admit, every time I start thinking about buying used, a story like this sets me straight. Imagine the person who bought that car and finds out in the first couple of days that an engine rebuild/replacement is in the immediate future.

Anybody buying a car with over 300k miles would/should already be prepared for an engine or transmission repair.

Yes from day 1. Especially if the car came from auction.

If 2Fas' Prius had auctioned for *at most* $6500 I could agree with you.

I'm not understanding the price correlation at auction vs the need for engine / transmission service. You cannot drive cars at auction, therefore engine and transmission issues are hard to detect, until after the car is sold and driven. The car starts so some people would take a gamble on it. But surely they would be prepared if the need for an engine or transmission comes up. I don't think $9xxx for a 2012 v is bad at all. The engine and transaxles can be purchased for about $3000 together. Not bad if you're a taxi company needing a car like this.

    2012 is besides the point.
    350k+ miles

Go ahead and be optimistic that the car will run another 100k miles before being junked.
Someone paid ~ $11k for 100k miles. That is 11 cents a mile if no other repairs pop up.

Compare that to 2Fas' first 360k miles that cost him around $23k net, or 6.4 cents a mile.

It cost me but I brought my mechanic. Out of 6 or 7 we looked at he recommended one. Others had signs of previous accidents, mechanical issues, etc. Needless to say if I plan to keep car for long and put many miles on it I'd still buy new. Dealer still managed to dupe me, they lost second FOB and gave non-matching set of floor mats. Had to buy FOB but at least they didn't charge me for FOB programming

Hard to imagine getting a better deal. We should all pay you to be our agent when we car shop :)

Just the trade in dollar amount does not tell you much about the transaction as a whole.

It does in this case. Even if 2Fas paid MSRP for the new car, he got the deal of the decade.

You would need to know the loan details and negative equity involved

    No, you do not.

The negative equity is not dealer profit, and the loan details are mostly off-setting default risk*.

*If they were not, the consumer would simply re-finance.

I have a 2006 with 298,725 miles on it. I have not changed either the HV battery or the 12 volt battery. I am going to replace the 12 volt this weekend though, and would appreciate suggestions on replacements. The transaxle is original fluid, I have changed plugs twice, did recall work I'm on my third set of tires currently using Falken Sensia. They are a bit loud but am still getting 46 mpg, I drive 144 miles a day for work. I have not changed my brake pads yet either. I did recently get a P0420 code and that is the reason I'm looking to change my 12 volt battery.

Sorry I just saw I posted this in the Prius V forum, I bought my wife a 2012 V last year it is a very nice car I like the additional room int he back seat over my Gen II.

    SC,
IIRC the 12v sold by Toyota dealerships costs about $180 and has a prorated 84 month warranty. That works out to ~ $2 a month.

I have found the P0420 code is an O2 sensor and once the parameters were wrong in the computer that throws a code, that was on my 01 Outback.

Thank you for the information, the battery I will probably get from Toyota I can't complain about the current one. Thanks for the code info The check engine light is back off now, but I'll have the o2 sensor checked. Hoping the 2012 V does as good as the 2006 has done.
