I installed 2 "rebuilt" Dorman combination meters (instrument clusters) on 04/05 Prius in the last few days.

Both customers called me this morning (coldish morning) and said displays were blank then came back on once warmer.

Anyone seen this behavior with Dorman reman combo meters?

Here is how to remove the dash top and combination meter.

The campaign is 9 years from date car first put into service, so 04's and some 05's are not eligible. AFAIK Luscious Garage has never used Dorman rebuilt meters, they were having an someone else refurbish them.

Correct. Luscious was using someone for repaired Combo Meters, but same outcome as the Doorman Combo Meters: repairs don't last. It may even be possible that Doorman gets theirs' from the same person as Luscious did.

When your combo meter goes out, just get new.

    Expensive advice.
I'll look for lightly used if needed.

CMs fail much less frequently than say, traction batteries, so unless different years require different versions the used market should be cheap.

Addendum: These seem to be called 'cluster speedometer panels' on Ebay and run $100 - $150 for used. Compare that to the new cost, which IIRC is about $1000.

Only problem with used is odometer reading and VIN have to be entered somehow. Dorman and other rebuilders program the info into the unit before shipping.

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder Paul. I forgot those details because I have no intention of reselling the car.

I thought the odometer reading can be an clerical change at the local DMV. No idea about the VIN.
Do you know what Manufacturer years can be interchanged ?

Since this is a known defect that carries a 9 year warranty, wouldn't it just make sense to tell the dealer it failed before the 9 years is up? It'll happen sooner or later, better take care of it before the 9 years is up

it would be interesting to know the percentage of bad ones, but it's likely quite small, and i don't think they all fail eventually, but were only on year eleven.

NEW Combo Display, Part# 8329147360, is $266.54 at Camelback. Rebuilt on eBay is $149. Small difference of $117.54; I'd go new b/c better chance of lasting as long as the original one that died. This would be a small selling advantage, should you sell your car private party later.

Maybe try selling your dead Combo Meter to one of these repair people for a few dollars. This would make the $117.54 difference just a little bit smaller.

I'm sure some dealers who like easy $, will take customers word that it happened.

Other dealers may push back that this intermittent problem needs to be observed.

Don't know how dealers would respond if one had cell ph video evidence of the combo meter not working?

Wonder if Toyot treats this like HMO's:
    1) always deny unless evident in presence of service writer.
    2) allow if customer makes a big stink

Right you are -- quite a bit less than the $1000 I remembered.

Seems that one h/w version is up to 11/2005 and the next version until 1/2007. Don't know what happens later.

Would this new one from Camelback still have to be "flashed" with the information that Paul mentioned above? Would Camelback do that before shipping? If not, I wonder if a local dealer would even do it, and if so, what they would charge. I presume this is not something one could do with Techstream.

Good question. Call/email them to know for sure.

I'm sure all dealers can program this and probably charge for it. Doubtful programming is included w/ purchase price.

Only dealers have the programming ability b/c of fraud. Evil people would be rolling back the odometer w/ techstream.

You could say the same thing about key duplication.

The TSB states the dealer has to take your word for it, it doesn't have to malfunction in their presence.
