Chevrolet 'Bolt' Concept 200-Mile Electric Car To Target Tesla

It's going to be an interesting Monday.

 

6" shorter wheelbase than volt. will this be prius C size?

 

It's based on the Sonic. This is the first I've heard of it referred as the Bolt and not Sonic EV.

 

A couple of reports quoting their own direct sources say it is at least as large as the Volt and probably a bit larger and is a "family car".

I don't think this BEV will be called the Bolt just because GM reserved that word. I think that trademark was to keep others from using something that sounds too close to Volt. Try to market a soft drink called "Koke" and see how far you get. LOL

 

not a bad name though, why not use it? lightning bolt. better than murai. just think how many you'd sell in san diego.

 

There is the Trax crossover based on the Sonic platform.

 

I've seen the Trax, not bad, a lot better than the i3. But then again, so is the Edsel.

 

The concept Bolt will be revealed at the auto show in Detroit this Monday along with Volt 2.0. Pretty exciting news!

I can't reconcile how the Chevy spark can cost as much as it does with only 84 miles range - and suddenly for just a few bucks more they're going to raise the bar to 200 miles range. Still, I wish them well. I'm still hoping almost 4 years later - that the Volt will eventually comply with all of GM's earlier boasts. Doing that might make the '200 mile ev' claim more likely. Go GM! HEY - does this mean that somebody is knocking at GM's door to build EV's?

I speculate that the Spark EV was a beta-test model for the new EV. They needed a full EV out there to collect data so they could hone the battery chemistry and control systems. Mark Reuss claimed the ELR had to be create for the same reasons.

 

I for one am extremely excited about this. I'm pretty confident my next vehicle after the PiP (could be quite a few years) will be a BEV (no ICE).

 

Me too! I don't care who makes it as long as it has the range, reliability and utility. I was even excited about the Soul EV. lol

Ok, the GM Volt was the PiP that Toyota has all but killed. The PiP was made because so many owners were independently making their own.

Now the GM "Bolt" from the same company that crushed the EV1 . . . a crushing that paved the way for the Prius success.

IMHO, the answer is owners are going to have create independent traction battery, second sources. We need this because we can not be at risk of a CEO or corporate board deciding 'they want to do something else.' Let them but let us have an alternative that will keep these wonders of technology rolling for decades . . . until they finally figure out . . . 'Hey those are customers!'

i just hope they don't over promise and under deliver like they did with the volt.

 

GM screwed up every 'hybrid' in the 2000s wasting huge sums and making them the butt of every joke. The GM BAS and two-modes were and remain abject failures. Then add the anti-Prius slanders and lies GM sponsored and Bob Lutz uttered . . . well they worked hard to be idiots and even the latest "Cruze vs Prius" crap shows a distinct lack of commitment.

The flaws of the Volt are not uncommon for a first generation hybrid . . . I still commute with the NHW11 and tonight ran errands with our ZVW30 that does everything the NHW11 at 5 mph faster. Yet there remains a long list of flaws with the ZVW30 including fixes like my self-installed, 1.5 kW peak, sine-wave inverter. There is a lot of 'buzz' about Volt V2.0 but I remember the "Beta" press releases of the 1980s.

So I have no confidence that Bolt V1.0 will be anything but GM 'greenwash.' The technology is not that hard but commitment to battery-electric . . . reminds me of:
