Programming the Smart Key

Don't know about the former and hope that I will NEVER need it.

The latter is good advice. I have three keys.

 

So in order to program a 2010 Prius to an used eBay SKS is to connect card to Techstream and reprogram? This will work if the FCC ID and IC numbers on the back of the master SKS matches? Am I correct?

 

No, you misread the information earlier in this thread. You need Techstream (or Mini-VCI) to program any fobs to Gen3 car. The Fob has to have the same FCC ID as the original FOB for that model car. however, if the FOB is "used" you'll also need to perform a SEED RESET which requires locksmith credentials or other means of obtaining the passcode.

The easiest DIY method is to purchase MiniVCI online and a new (virgin) FOB from an online Toyota dealer. (No seed reset required)

 

How about removing a key from Prius? One of my SKS keys got stolen so I would "unlink" that key from my car. Is reseeding necessary? I have ordered an OBD cable online and it comes with the TIS software so I'd like to know what to face after they get delivered. Will that have an option for me to delete the lost key from the car.?

Right now, I have 1 out of the 2 SKS keys that came with my car.

 

No, reseeding is necessary only if the key had been programmed to another car. A NEW key will ADD fine with the cable and Techstream software. You can also REMOVE the lost key from you Smart Key ecu without reseeding.

 

How about programming with a wireless OBD bluetoothed to a laptop with techstream software on it. Would that work or would it have to be a cable?

 

If your wireless OBD2 has Techstream compatible drivers it could work, but I've never seen a setup that does other than the $500 mongoose cable.

You need a proper Techstream/mongoose/mini-vci cable with compatible drivers.

You first remove the lost fob (Techstream will erase all but the active one) then re-add your other fobs.
As long as the new ones have not been paired to a different car you will be fine.

If fobs are used/ebay you'll need to reseed.

 

A video showing how to program new Gen 3 smart keys would be a big help to Gen 3 owners. Is there anyone that can provide that info..

 

I was looking for such instructions before buying the cable/software to make sure but couldn't find any, at least not for the newest software version which I think is 9.30.002. This one here on Youtube but I think for the older version:

From what I've read, it's more difficult to install the software unless you have a Window XP laptop. I ended up with a local locksmith that charge only $52 to program/cut the key which is cheaper than buying the software and have the key cut combined.

 

Gen3 requires Techstream or Mini-VCI to program. Once you have the software it's pretty obvious how to do it, as long as you have have new virgin fobs. Used fobs are much harder to program, requires locksmith credentials or seed calculation service.

 

I am thinking the same about the buying the software. This is my first time getting a new fob so I wanted to make sure everything go smooth with the locksmith first because my car was bought used and I don't know the history of it. Plus I was concerned that the only key I had has the HYQ14AAB on it which is not usual for Prius. Everything turned out ok and it took the locksmith the whole 2 mins to add the new key. Next time (hope not), I'll get cable, seems more fun that way, and I have another Toyota at home.

 

thanks for all the previous discussions. I had my keys then my car stolen. Thief was caught red handed but managed to dispose of the keys. Due to investigation and waiting for insurance to show up I had time to order a used fob and mini-vci cable and get a hold of techstream 9.32 version. I had to reset/reseed the ecu. If you get the reseed code online make sure it works with your techstream version. I was stupid and didn't check to make sure the battery in the fob was good or not. Everything went fine but at the end of the reset it tells you to add more fobs or hit some button/pedel 5 times to exit programming mode. Well I think because the battery wasn't working at the time it treated my smart fob like a dumb fob and now it seems my car was stuck in programing mode.

I finally figured out the battery issue and put in a new one, and was able to reseed the smart wireless part. So an ebay used fob was used and setup 3/4 of the way by the reseed method. I tried to do a dumb key fob (no remote) and I couldn't seem to get it recognized. It has a 4D transponder chip and I wonder if the Genii is 4C chip? Anyway I have another used fob coming so I will try again when it gets here to get the smart part working. Right now I have and odd problem in that the security light is double blinking all the time. If I recall I thought it only had single blinks before?

When I turn off car and remove the fob it goes solid. When I put the fob in it starts to double blinking. When I start the car it continues to double blink even when I drive. Thinking this means I still have something wrong? Perhaps it never exited programming mode?

 

For Gen2 lost all keys you need to reseed the immobilizer portion of techstream first, this will make the key work "in the slot", THEN you need to reseed the smartkey system (different section in techstream). After you do the immobilizer the car should be drivable.

Is this what you did?

 

yes i reset/reseed the immobilizer first. however at this point the keyfob i used as the master had a dead battery. Also when it asked for the second key to program i recalled instructions on what to do if you had no more keys to program. It was something like push the power button 5 times to exit and the security key light on dash should stop blinking.. I tried that and I felt like it didn't work correctly.

After I discovered the battery I did the reset to the smartkey part (wireless entry) which after the 5th time worked after replacing a dead fob battery. [Yeah how stupid, I didnt bother to see if the led on the fob was even lighting up duhhh].

The wireless remote works, and the fob works in the slot, but the proximity part does not.

 

Another obvious question, is the smartkey button under the dash in the out position?

While you were programming the smartkey, did the LED on the smartkey flash rapidly for a few seconds and car "Beep" for each fob after you pressed lock again on the remote?

 

Might be better if they went to the Gen II area with their FOB questions.

 

I just bought a 2011 Prius that came with only 1 FOB. I would like to get a second. I am confused about one thing:

I understand that its the ECU that gets programmed and not the FOB, so how does the ECU know the difference between a used and virgin FOB?

Also does anyone know where I can find a locksmith in So Cal that could program for a used FOB?
