OK good...hmm...did they give you any rationale for 50%?
Did they say if you car is CA-certified or not?
I am wondering if these "goodwill" cases are really cases the customer has some valid claim to CARB warranty.
Sorry don't mind me, I've been waiting for a case like yours to help understand CARB coverage in cases like yours.

MD cars had to be 2007 or newer to qualify for carb warranty, 2006 would not qualify.

The assistance Toyota offers depends on who takes your call. They have the power to cover or not cover. There is really no written criteria for the goodwill request

....yes that's our usual interpretation here, but I am not so sure. If the 2006 is CA-certified you live in a CARB state, someone has to explain to me why that falls outside the warranty. In this specific case, we do not know if the 2006 is CA-certified. I am thinking quite a few 2006 are CA-certified (such as mine maybe).

It probably would have to depend on the in service date and which date it was in service when first registered. If the car was registered first in MD, although it's a CARB state now, they didn't adopt the standards until 2007, thus disqualifying the 2006. I would think a CA car would be able to get the CARB warranty in any state if it's with the CARB warranty period, regardless if the servicing dealer is located in a CARB state.

My 2005 is from TX, which has never adopted the CARB standards, but the car has the CA emissions standards sticker in the hood.

OK good I think my 2006 probably also has CA emissions standards sricker.
So if a car like that is registered in a CARB state, I am thinking CARB warranty applies.
Now some here say Toyota has some internal rules about the car having to be first be registered in a CARB state as the first state of registration, but I have never seen anything in writing about that.

maybe I call...but for me it's academic as I am non-CARB state over 130k miles, so I have no dog in the fight.
Except if my batt ever went bad, it sure would be nice to know who qualifies for the 50% off deal!!!

Any goodwill warranty will be left to the discretion of the agent handling the call. No written goodwill, it'll be based on the agents own conversation with the caller. I truly believe it's a loyalty program, the more loyal you are to Toyota, the more help they provide. I've seen all percentages, 100%,80%,50% and so on.

OK Cloud I now think you did good!
I am probably backing off my earlier statement that many 2006 (outisde of CARB) may be CA-certified.

Trying to understand my Prius emissions sticker under the hood (pic below).
Keyword I believe we need to see for CA-certified is last sentence probably needs to say "AT PZEV"...but mine says "SULEV"
So I now think my car is probably an example of non CA-certified purchased outside CARB.
I'd like to see example of a CA-certified emissions sticker, but presumably yours is like mine.

I have 3 of these Gen II cars, this one is from my 2006 CA car. The 2005 TX car also has the same label.

So I revert back to many my first thought that many 2006 (and earlier?) are CA-Certified?
I am thinking if we iterate to 2007 we may start to see differences (based on what my VA auto inspection guy tells me).
I will plan to start a thread in Gen2 where we try to capture any differences.

I'm in WA state and have been told by my independent shop I need a new HV battery. Am planning to call Toyota to see if I can get a "goodwill warranty" of any kind on it. Should I take it to the Toyota dealer I bought it from last February and have them try to do this? Or should I call myself? Any insight would be most welcome.

If you bring it to your Toyota dealership, you can have them call for you. They'll probably charge you to diagnose the problem again.

I would look up the service records to see if this wasn't the reason the car was sold to the dealership in the first place. It's less than 1 year since you purchased, maybe they have a 1 year guarantee on their cars? Or the very least, provide you with the service in calling in for the goodwill warranty and not charge you for the diagnosis.

I know there wasn't any warranty when I bought it. It was a one-owner vehicle with all service records which is why I bought it from the Toyota dealer here in Tacoma, WA. The fact that this has happened so soon after buying it is such a shock.

I'll get it to the dealer early next week (their service department is closed until Monday due to the New Year holiday). And try to appeal to their wanting to maintain their goodwill, as well as Toyota's. We shall see.

the car having all service records from toyota will help in getting the goodwill warranty, they like to hear the car is dealer maintained.

...did you give us some of the vital stats like miles on the vehicle etc?
I assume the first owner was in WA? If you read the 2006 warranty and maintenance guide, I believe it is quite unclear about which 2006 vehciles are qualified for the extended CARB warranty of 10-yrs 150k miles. There is one case here a guy who moved to PA from CA is contesting in court. But if you're over 150k miles that would be mute legal point.
