So...I always voiced my opinion saying Toyota was too slow to release any detail on the 4th gen Prii family and I would consider a Volt.

I considered it...but ended up with a PiP 2012 used vehicle with $26000 miles on it for $19k. Was that a good deal? It looked like it was in great condition and ultimately we did want a plugin for 5 passengers with Toyota reliability to help facilitate our needs for two cars.

So we have a 2010 Prius with 70k miles working great, 48mpg lifetime and now a 30k pip. I was amazed when I test drove it that the indicators evolved (they don't show decimal places) and it did seem like it had better HV mileage! A little boring because of the fact we have twin vehicles, but the headlights are different and there are subtle changes in the interior as well as the new infotainment system. I don't know what I think about the map...

But I'm excited to try the PIP out, any hints or things to try?

I looked deeply into getting a Volt (4 seater killed it there), Leaf (range killed it there, and their used vehicles could have more degradation) and Ford Energi series (space killed it there!)

I don't know, I guess the PiP seemed perfect. Would probably keep it for a few years and hopefully wait for the PiP 2nd gen to work its kinks out. As of now, I think the IV gen won't come out til late next year and the PiP was supposedly slated to the year after?

Here's to hoping Toyota becomes more positive on Plugin Hybrids.

    What?

I'm just asking for hints on driving my first 90 miles with it fully charged. Also curious about if it was a good deal or did I get hosed :p

Personally, I think neither the Volt or the Plug-in Prius are good EV cars. Twelve miles (maybe) per charge or double that with the Volt; pretty dismal as an electric vehicle in my books. I drive the Prius because it gets the highest overall score on all the other factors besides EV range. If money were no object, I'd want a Tesla S with a built-in gasoline-powered APU in reserve.

We're just looking for a more efficient vehicle that seats 5, more efficient than our current Prius. Tesla was out of our price range, and we didn't like to be totally electric dependent (range anxiety). Perhaps this PiP will allow us to test the plugin infrastructure and see how things go.

10 miles EV might help and my wife's work is 10 miles away. No plugin station there yet, but we figured we're even saving against our regular Prius who's now considered a gas guzzler because we take the vehicle out all the dang time :(

Used though. Of course we don't get any incentives. But warranty is good for another 70k miles on the traction battery. What is really weird is I looked at the EV score, and the last owner drove it purely in HV, what the heck? Also, the charging mechanism was cool and showed about 10 miles EV not fully charged before I left the dealership.

    dianne is letting the '15's go for lease at 350. down and 350./month. 350. x 36 months = 12,600. +350. call it 13,000. from 30k msrp? $17,000. after 3 years.

But lease != owning...I had to battle that idea as well. Even though there is depreciation in a car right away. So might is $19,000 and I get to own it and potentially trade it in for possibly $10k after 3 years (which looking at your figure probably would cost me $9k net)

Inferno nice yes I think that is a good deal...I was also looking at that same deal.... a few weeks ago we had a fender bender and I thought they might total the car and gimme $9000 cash and then I could swing a PiP deal (turns out I am a good dreamer but bad estimator they just fixed it ). In Va. we have a heavy annual car tax, so a used PiP like this I think makes sense for me too,

Fender bender with your gen 2 in the pic? Keep waiting :p Gen IV around the corner, but I've been saying that for over a year now lol.

Maybe you could wait until the PiP Gen IV comes out.

Something odd though, Toyota is really choking the release of the 2015 PiP at the dealerships. Could Toyota actually cancel the PiP altogether?

dianne has 15's, i think they just want to keep the price up, and not have to give them away.

Hmm, wonder if they are slipstreaming fixed chargers in the '15s back in Japan.

It could be that the demand for 2015s are being choked so that more people are likely to buy the Gen 4 when it comes out in 2016.

This may or may not be true, but I've heard that Toyota uses about 25% of the world's supply of neodymium for manufacturing their hybrids, and there may be a supply problem.

Toyota finds way to avoid using rare earth metals like neodymium and dysprosium in hybrids
