    The Tesla S is a sports car, and the upcoming X is a SUV, but the BEV options for the majority won't expand beyond a hatchback until battery prices drop to the point to allow the longer range without increasing the price. The shape just allows the most utility out of a vehicle trying to keep weight and air drag down.

    PHVs due offer the selection, or will soon, that people have among ICE only vehicles. We have a sedan and hatch with the Energis. The Volt is a sedanesque hatch. Not the fastest sports car, but the ELR does have much of Caddy's suspension and other performance portfolio. Then we should be getting Mitsubishi's Outlander PHV soon.

    There is even the Prius PHV. It may not have enough plug, but it still has all the pluses of the original. Yet Toyota seems reluctant to sell it. Toyota had announced a nationwide rollout about 18 months after its release. That came and went. Some made excuses. I admit with the expected release of the next gen Prius looming, selling the current PPI for just a year in the rest of the country seems a little silly. But the next Prius gen has been pushed back a year, and the next PPI a year after that. Yet there is still no plans to expand the PPI market. Perhaps the FCV federal credits come out of the same pool as the plug in ones, and Toyota is banking theirs for when the FCV is released.

    for all we know, if bev's ever become popular, toyota might have the best one in their back pocket and surprise everyone by cashing in instead of doing all the missionary work.

    No one has to tell me these are 'pretty' -

    Definitely don't find this (below!) 'pretty' -

    ... and the seating / controls to me, like so many purpose built alt cars is rank.

    This thing looks more like a toy than a car. Even if it was $15k and went 150 miles, only fleets would buy it, govt. use.

    I don't want a pure EV. it is not particle for now. I want a EV with range extender like Volt, but like the one build by Toyota. not the 15 mile plug-in cost $10000 more.

    And they do look much better in the metal. There's one that lives near me and on the road they look really good, whereas the one in that picture above looks a dogs dinner.

    Legal requirement over here. The rear lights must be visible even if the rear hatch or rear doors are open. If the door or hatch would block BOTH rear lights/reflectors then additional lighting must be fitted. The Mitsubishi Shogun/Pagero have these additional lights, as does the Audi Q7 etc. It results in some nasty bodges to the rear styling such as the Discovery and Diahatsu;

    Notice how all the CEOs whining about building EVs are finance types. Then notice how the CEO successfully making EVs is not a finance type.

    The real trouble I have with the whining is how the same logic applies to the Prius and other hybrids. Major retooling and production supply line changes are expensive...for one time.

    I put Nissan with Tesla. The sell the Leaf, and are building factories across the globe.
    Fiat's CEO is an engineer, unless he got booted out recently.
