When I plug my iPhone into the USB port sometimes a message pops up that says "The accessory uses too much power and will be turned off" Then a few seconds later my phone will stop charging, but then within a matter of seconds it will charge again and go on and off like this each time giving me the error message.

So what good is the USB port if you can't use it to charge your phone?

a physical connection of your audio electronics to your car's audio system (there's this little option in the car's radio connection marked "usb")

i believe the usb in the car is rated at 500ma whereas the iphone needs at least 1000ma/1amp to charge. so the lower ma rating will cause the iphone to cycle thru the charging phase.

Are you using the Apple cable or a cheap one? I have a PiP and I've charged my iPhone 5 albeit really slowly. Best thing is to use Bluetooth and use an "iPad" 2.1 amp charger on the iPhone.

I've charged an iPhone 5 and 6 with the USB port with no issues for over a year.
I did see that message you're getting one time, but it went away after I unplugged the phone and plugged it back in.

Someone in a previous thread said it was due to using a non-factory cable: Entunes and iPhone 4s | PriusChat

I'd never try to charge my phone with the USB data port, it was designed for the iPod. I keep a USB flash-drive plugged into that port. I use a USB adapter in the lighter socket for charging. Bluetooth works well enough for playing music from the phone.

I agree, I-phones draw more amps than allowed with a standard USB. I use a plug in charger so I can get the 1amp + that is used when driving with WAZE or GPS app. Look for a tablet which normally use 1.2 ampere for the larger screens

Ensure you are using the genuine Apple cable; I had the same issue/message while trying to use a cheap knockoff cable; switched to the original cable and everything is fine. As for charging, my iPhone 5 is always plugged in via the USB port and it charges just fine; phone is always charged without any issues.

The current draw on a properly working 5s is approx 0.49 Amps!! Unless there is some hig running in the
No the phone only draws 1/2 amp, but that is the limit of that USB port.
I have a USB cable with a Volt & Amp meter in it.
    Very handy!!

OP you should use a different way to charge your phone!
