Hi I'm thinking of buying a new Prius with a Solar roof, but It doesn't come with a spare tyre :-( The dealers here aren't very helpful in finding out the parts I need (they have no "bulletin" about this for the Prius) Just wondering if anyone has done this and has the part numbers for all the components needed to add a space saver spare tyre ? e.g. the wheel rim, tyre, tie down bolt(?) , jack, wheel brace etc) Also wondering if the spacesaver "kit" is the same for both 15" and 17" equipped models? I'm in the UK if that makes any difference. Phil
There's no reason for a solar roof to preclude having a spare (I have both). The only Prius cars that lack spares in N. America are the plug-in models.
I bought a space saver spare for my PiP from a scrapyard for £20. It has a good tyre and is unmarked. It came from a 2002 Avensis. The car comes with everything you need to change a wheel, jack, brace etc. under the passenger seat. I believe the full specification is: PCD 5X100mm, 54.1mm centre hole, and 45mm offset, 135-70-16 tyre. Fitted to: Avensis 1998-2003 Carina 1988-1997 Celica 1994-2007 Prius 2004-Onwards. You need a cover large enough for the standard road wheel so the dirty, wet, punctured tyre may be stored until it is repaired. In the UK PiP the spare 'doughnut' fits vertically in the slot just in front of the rear bumper where the charging cable is normally stored, the cable fits as well. Not too convenient but stops it sliding around and you can get at it when the boot (trunk) is stacked. But I just chuck it in the boot or if necessary behind the drivers seat. Never been a problem.
Thanks for the info. Sound like the scrapyard might be the best option.... Does anyone know if the spacesaver wheels & tyres are the same on cars with 15" and 17" wheels? Phil
There's no difference, as far as I know (have 17" OEM). Your Prius is not a Plug-In, correct? I'm thinking your only problem is procuring a spare, no problem with fitting under the subfloor. Is this actually the norm in UK: some non plug-in models are missing a temporary spare?? In North America, any non plug-in Prius has the spare.

Sounds like Honda Fit in Canada: manual tran got spare, auto got a pump and slime. Logic was to drop curb weight a bit for fuel economy tests, I think. Spare was available as an option. I would check with dealership, if you haven't. Gotta be a very common "upgrade". You'll maybe need more than just the spare, the associated plastic cradle likely varies from the pump version.
That's the battery in a different car--a Plug-in, shown to illustrate how a donut spare can be put in a car without provision for a spare. The OP's car is not a plug-in though, so he should be able to stow under the cargo area floor.
I think it's the same available volume, but it's got filler plastic in there, molded to hold the pump and slime kit. So he'd need to pull all of that out, get a spare with it's filler plastic. It does look in the video, like the jack and wrench are there. The salesman in the video infers the reason for no spare is to reduce weight, get a better fuel economy status. This is sim. to the Honda Fit strategy I mentioned above. Seems very frustrating for owners.
