Went from same size Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max to Bridgestone Ecopia tires and lost 3 MPG even running them at 38 PSI! Anyone else have this problem?
Yes, Every driver of every car ever. But Prius drivers obsess over it. In 5,000 miles the MPG will be back.
Yes they are Ecopia EP 422, I do have to say the Goodyear's were the worst winter tire I have ever driven on and I live in Minnesota. I think the Bridgestone's will be much better so hopefully the mileage will improve as I have a little over 4000 on them.
The Goodyear is the worst tire I've ever driven on. I have very little faith in it. It has decent grip when it's dry, bad grip in the rain, and from what my brother told me, useless in the winter. I will get summer tire or the Continental Procontact with EcoPlus, when the Goodyear is needs to be replaced. I'm that guy that will trade in less mpg for better ride and more control.
If you have not already done so, you might want to go TireRack.com and read the article about why new tires can show lower apparent MPG. They would suggest 3 MPG is par the course, even if you went to the exact same tire, under certain circumstances.
Yes, now that I open it in firefox I see a skimlinks ad associated with the word Bridgestone... but that doesn't necessarily mean that the ad was right. Lucky coincidence this time.
Not sure about your chrome but mine is fine with the link. And yes, just lucky because if you click on the Goodyear it will go to ebay not Assurance Fuel Max.
Happens with nearly all BRAND NEW tires, even if they are the same exact model. Please see my tire thread for more info on what to expect when changing tires. Low Rolling Resistance replacement tires: Current List | PriusChat The Ecopia EP422 is not quite a fuel efficient as the now gone EP100 summer tire but they have much better snow traction. The other characteristics are lacking but for a Prius it usually isn't a problem unless you like to drive it like you stole it. For winter driving I prefer these over the magical Energy Saver A/S which are not so great in snow. If safety is your main concern then the Premier A/S or PureContact are the best "LRR" tire for the Prius but expect to permanently lose a few mpg.
