Pennzoil Platinum motor oil, 5 qt container: $20 price at the Walmart register.

Then get $15 Walmart gift card when you mail in the request form postmarked by 9/15/2009. Good for purchases from Walmart between 8/1/2009 and 8/31/2009. Limit two gift cards per family, household or address. Not available to residents of Rhode Island (anyone know why not?)

RI has an on-the-spot rebate law. Rebates must be provided at purchase.

I wanted to bring this thread back to life to compare current synthetic engine oil prices to five years ago. Today I bought qty. two, 5 US quart containers of 5W-30 Castrol Edge full synthetic oil at Walmart, for $21.66 each (plus sales tax.) That is a pretty good price, Pennzoil Platinum is $1 more, Mobil 1 is $4 more, Quaker State is around the same price as Castrol Edge.

Pennzoil occasionally has outstanding promotions that I really took advantage of this year. Too much actually, but I couldn't resist and have redeemed most of the rebates already.

I bought 5 qts of PP for $22.66+tribute from Walmart last week with a $1 off per gallon rebate offer for up to 20 gallons. So, after I buy 20 gallons of petrol at Shell, the 5 qts of PP will have cost me only $4.

I don't expect that there will be another promotion like this one again for a while. I sure hope not. I have enough full synthetic motor oil to fill a 55 gallon drum almost half way LOL. No electric car will be stored in my garage anytime soon.

No. The last time my Altima took 18 gallons and I put 2 gallons into the gas can.

I considered buying a 2012 Mitsubishi i-Miev (before I bought the 2014 Nissan Altima) for the federal tax credit but its range is too short for my roundtrip commute and my employer does not and will not provide a charging station on campus (my employer manufactures parts for ICEs).

Purchased single liters of Toyota 0W20 Thursday at nearby dealership: $5.65 (Can). This is everyday price, very convenient since I'm picking up the filter and drain bolt washer too. I get just what I need for the current change, don't stock up.

If I can save $$$ on non-perishable stuff, I will. Motor oil has a sufficiently long shelf life that I'll use it all in time with three drivers in the house.

The powers that be have decreed that deflation is harmful to the economy and are determined to reach a 2% annual inflation ASAP. While 20th century inflation isn't just around the corner, it will eventually be back. Certain McDonald's locations have already tinkered with Dollar Menu prices. $1 soft drinks are $1.29. The McDouble is $1.49.

We have two cars, each with ~ 11 gallon tanks. My wife and I have been known to date at Shell ;)

And by the way, it appears that new promotions are ongoing -- Buy Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum at retailers (Walmart e.g.) and collect a 50 cents/gallon discount on up to 20 gallons of petrol at participating Shell stations. That works out to a maximum $10 discount on 5 qts that usually runs about $25. Call it $3/qt for excellent motor oil.

If you then stack the $10 mail-in rebate on top, you end up at $1/qt

    Promotion ends 12/31

Oh yeah, I'm with you. We get a lot of staple items at Costco. The gamut, from AA batteries to toilet paper. Still sometimes, I find myself hesitating on a purchase, thinking "am I gonna live long enough to use all this?".

Just with motor oil, $5.65 per liter, while not the lowest, is readily available without running around, and a relatively trivial amount, even with the 6 month or 8000 km Canadian schedule.

The main thing, I like having a single Toyota dealership invoice, dated, showing all the components of an oil change. And they're tracking my purchases at the dealership. Might come in handy if I'm trying to prove my DIY schedule.

I've got to admit I'm a bit of a hoarder too when it comes to motor oil. My main grievance is that lighter weight oils (like anything 5w--) are really overpriced here, and I just find it galling to pay $60 or $70+ for a jug of oil (typical price of most 5w30 oils here in Australia) only to see it go on sale the next week for $35 or something like that. It was experiences like this that got me into hoarding oil. :)
