Madmike23, the op was asking about the gen3. That vid is only relavent to the gen2.

Ed Headington. There are 3 ways to accomplish the reverse beep delete in the gen3. Maurices gave u 1. Another 1 is with a scangauge2 or with Toyota's Techstream. This is the software that the dealer uses. There are some members like myself thst have this software.

That's great, I'm going to ask my dealership if they can do it also. It's annoying and I hear there's an alert for the hatch also. So if you're moving furniture, lumber or can't close the hatch completely, you'll suffer an entire trip with that annoying sound.

 

I must be the ''odd man out'' here-- the beep does not bother me. Matter of fact, I prefer having it... Twice now--- I have inadvertently put mine in ''R'' when meaning to be in ''D'', and caught myself with the beeping. I suppose I am not as used to a Prius as many here, and still reach for the gearshift on steering column when starting off sometimes. Man truly is a creature of habit.

 

That's very true. We used to mess with the carburetors, change the timing, now we're reduced to disabling the Reverse Beep.

Again: it's to remind you what gear you're in. I've managed to lose track, once or twice, in spite of the beep. I never lost track with a conventional shifter: it required a series of physical actions to get from Park, through Reverse, Neutral to Drive.

The Prius "joystick" is not intuitive. You nudge into some gear, and it returns to center, cryptic, mute. Yeah, there's a display on the dash, but that really doesn't jump out at you. The beep is a needed "patch" for their design choice.

Once the reverse beep has been dealt with, the next step is that pesky seat belt warning. And after enough have backed off cliffs, or gone through their windshields, the fad'll die out.

 

The Carista app now works in iOS (Apple) devices for anyone interested (formerly it was Android only). I just disabled my backup beeper and seatbelt beeper with no problems using my iPhone 5. The app is $20 but for a geek like me it was worth it. Also required is a wifi ODBII adapter. Carista.com for details. I'm not selling Carista, just think it's a good product.

 

Stop by Toyota while in warranty period. Ask them to "disable" it. They should have no issue with toggling it to "one beep" mode.

Why is it there at all? Many drivers are morons who don't track what gear they put the car in. Everything is being engineered for the idiots in the world.

 

In my other cars, I have sometimes had to tell people to "be quiet - I have to focus when I'm backing out". No need to do that in the beeping Prius

That said, I could see the beep being really annoying in many situations..
One example - people driving in situations where they need to be in reverse for a long time (like backing onto a busy road)

 

I find the backup beeper incredibly annoying (I have the same reaction to the beeping sound of supermarket scanners), to the
point where I cannot keep the car if they do not turn it off. It strikes me as bad design; if Toyota's concern is that the car doesn't
make a sound, it would be very easy to replace the beep with the sound of a typical car engine when the car is in reverse.
It's the kind of thing that inspires me to look at other cars in the future.

 

The beeping sound is only on the interior, and it's there as a reminder that you're in reverse. It came about due to concerns about the return-to-center gear shift, which doesn't give a visual/tactile clue about what gear you're in.

The hope is the beep will reduce the incidence of a variation of sudden acceleration syndrome. For example: you think you're in Drive, when you're still in Reverse, step on the gas, slam into something or someone behind you.

I'm ok with it, actually appreciated it once or twice.

 

I personally will keep the beep and won't have it removed by the dealer - I appreciate the safety factor.

That being said, since all 2015 Prius Liftback models now come with a backup camera standard, one could make a case that one or two beeps could be enough, as the backup camera image provides some additional feedback that the car is in reverse.

However, I have noticed that pressing one of the buttons (at least on the 6.1" system) surrounding the screen causes the backup camera image to disappear, even while still in reverse.

 

I've got the backup camera, as a little image on left side of rear view mirror. Only thing: it's SO wide angle, I'm very sceptical of distances/proximity, can't take it serious. I understand the Prius v (for one) has made the field-of-view less extreme.
