Well, our 2005 Prius has 146,000 miles on it. The warning lights went haywire today. A quick trip to O'Reilly confirmed it -- REPLACE HYBRID BATTERY PACK.

I guess since I'm in Missouri I'm SOL? 100,000 miles has long since passed. Anyone had any luck calling Toyota and talking their way into some help...especially when you were below 150,000?

One last question -- the car was recently rear-ended pretty hard (by a person with no insurance or job, BTW). Is it possible for a rear-ending to cause damage to the battery? Might as well explore every avenue...

I don't think it harmed it...really it looked like only the bumper was damaged.

I've talked to the owner of Greentec. Almost bought a Gen 3 from him. I'll probably get a battery from him. What does it typically cost (and what is the warranty) from the dealer?

Greentec is offering Lithium Ion for Gen 2...which sounds a little intriguing. I wonder how much that helps the MPGs...

If I were you, I would get ahold of PC user ericbecky. I am confident he can at a minimum advise you on this but, will likely have a solution for you.

I don't think I would trust O'Reilly, or any other independent shop, to diagnose a failed HV battery pack.
I think you need a second opinion from a Toyota dealer.

a hard knock in the rear end could definitely damage the battery. i would proceed with caution.

Hey everyone. Here is the update.

Car is at one of the local Toyota dealers. It's confirmed: Batter pack needs replacing.

I've contacted Toyota, and they're supposed to get back with me within one business day...to see if they'll throw me a bone. I expect they will not.

My insurance company basically flat out told me they wouldn't cover it... since there is no way to prove that the rear-ending caused the battery any damage. Also the fact the car is 10 years old and has 146,000 miles on it.

What I expect will happen is Toyota won't help me much, so I'll end up taking it to Greentecauto.com

I can get a Lithium Ion battery from them for $2500.

Can you post the link to the info about the lithium battery?

I can't seem to find it on their website.

For $2500, you can get a brand new battery from Toyota......that'll last you another 10 years, most likely outlast the car. Why go with anything else?

I've talked to the owner about it. He made it sound like MPGs wouldn't increase a whole lot, but it should last longer. They offer a much longer warranty (5 years) on them too. They claim to have just started doing them. They've only done 4 so far.

Beginning next week PriusChat members will no longer have to search all over to find a replacement hybrid battery.

I will be selling batteries to PriusChat members through my hybrid repair shop at a price of $1,895. While not the absolute rock-bottom lowest price on the internet, a portion of each sale will go to help support PriusChat so that it can continue to be the best resource for anything Prius.

Rather than throwing your money out there and hoping that the company is reputable, I am someone you can trust.
I have been a member of this forum for over 10 years and have over a decade's experience working on hybrid cars. I continue to be head of the Midwest's longest running hybrid car club, and regularly provide outreach to educate people on hybrids. I am a known entity with a long, positive reputation.

Each refurbished battery will come with
    - 3-Year, nation-wide warranty
    - unlimited miles during the warranty period (non-fleet use)
    - Free shipping to the customer
    - Free return shipping of the old battery core

I look forward to providing this service to PriusChat members, and I look forward to keeping more Prius on the road.

Glad we have a Guinea pig for this kind of pack.

We will hold you to your commitment of regular updates.

Nothing more disappointing than when we all engage in a long conversation but then the OP drops off the forum completely.

Let me explain how this works:
    1. We, the Moderators, get a list of people who are allowed to promote their businesses from Danny.
    2. Sometimes, people get squirrely and they get added to the "Hell No!" list.
    3. Polluting a thread with multiple posts of "Delete this" doesn't get much done other than moving you towards #2.
    4. If you find something you believe to be questionable activity on the site, please use the [Report] button and explain your issues to us. We will take it from there.
There are two people I personally know and would trust hands down with my Prius: Eric in Madison, WI and Paul in Boulder, CO.
