Misfire due to oil in combustion chamber - causes, replace/repair engine?

I like the part of the $51 shop supplies in changing spark plugs and coils. Then add on the environmental compliance for another $35.

This shop sounds like a rip off but if they got the diagnostic right, $1500 is just the rate of the professional services. If this were a mercedes benz or a porsche, you would think differently about the charges.

 

This is another case where I hope the original poster drops back in from time to time to let us know if the repair fixed the problem long term.

 

Yeah that bill was definitely well padded. Especially considering that the same shop changed his spark plugs just 3k miles previously.

 

Easy. Rockauto.com lists the appropriate iridium spark plugs for $6.18 each. $6.18 x 4 = $24.72

They also list the coils (or igniters, whatever you want to call them) for $39.89 each. $39.89 x 4 = $159.56.

$159.56 + $24.72 = $184.28 with room for tax + shipping to STILL be under $200!

Anyways, Im a lifetime DIY'er so I post in this thread with an obvious bias. Paying anything over $400 for 4 spark plugs and coils on an ICE as easy to work on as the Prius is robbery to me. Of course, that IS subjective. Somebody who is afraid to work on their vehicle might find $1500 for a tune up acceptable. I definitely do not.

 

I as well hope the OP updates this thread after they have the work done, if for no other reason than to share their symptoms and their solution for them. But it's like buying a $100,000 hammer. The hammer actually cost is $20, but knowing what to strike with it costs $99,980. I wish noting but the best for the OP so they can get their gadget car back on the road. Cheers, my friend!

 

I'm with PriusGuy32. I'm absolutely baffled. I do wish I had $1500 to throw at a car with no symptoms.

 

Yes totally agree.

This is brilliant isn't it. First tell the customer that because of a simple misfire they need to shell out $5000 for a new engine, and then make them feel good when they can fix it for *only* $1500.

Even worse when you consider that it would have been over $3000 for them to change these plugs and igniters if not for their truly magnanimous gesture of waiving over $1500 worth of extra diagnostics that they said they could have charged him. What a joke!
