This was just my charge the other day. I started with about 3-4 miles still on the battery.

I was wondering what is the function of this last 20 minutes episode. Given that the battery is never fully charged due to the control by the software, its function cannot be that the status of being fully charged should be approached slowly. In a sense the final level of being charged is arbitrary, and not even close to fully charged.
Does it relate to bringing the battery in a kind of well-balanced state? If so, why is that important?

Another way of putting this is: is there any harm in always or often interrupting the charging process just before this last episode starts? You will have most of the obtainable charge at that point in time, so for a shorter trip that level of charge can be sufficient already. Or is there still a good reason to let the charging process finish completely?

Good idea. Then I could use my downhill from home to charge the battery instead of having to go into Neutral so the ICE won't start. The only problem is I would have to get up at 4 AM every morning to pull the plug at the right time. And even worse that time depends on what total amount of charge was needed. :(
