Traction Battery Survey.

    BOTH batteries failed at 128,000 mi. - at 155,000 and I think I need a water pump replaced.

    Seeing how someone above mentioned not being able to vote in this poll, can I just ask if anyone else is having problems? Apparently there is an option to put a time limit on a poll, but I didn't intentionally do that in this case.

    Just wondering, as once you create a poll you aren't able to edit it in any way, and as I've already voted I can't see whether or not the poll is still open.

    Thanks, that's good to know. :) Perhaps the person who was having trouble had already voted but forgotten about it. Or perhaps it was just the forum misbehaving on that particular day.

    Do you mean that you found the survey questions unclear?

    I voted without problems. My car is near 110,000 miles and still under guarantee up till 10 years irrespective of millage.

    Answer traction battery had failed before I came to these forums is missing.

    My prius traction battery was replaced under warranty (for previous owner) at 120tkm or 75tmiles.

    This thread seems like a good one to throw this question out.

    I've heard the main "Hybrid Battery" also called the "Traction Battery". Interchangeable terms. Sometimes it get's refered to as the HV battery.

    But why is it called a "Traction Battery"?

    Just why that term?

    The Traction battery provides energy to generate motion.

    Further to what Jimbo said, it's a very common term used to describe an electric motor which is used to provide linear motive power. Traction motor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    For example, if a mining machine had one motor to operate a bucket wheel and another motor (or set of motors) to move the machine across the ground, then these would typically get called "the bucket motor" and "the traction motors" respectively.

    So essentially the name "traction battery" just refers to the battery that supplies the motors that provide the tractive power.

    November 2003 GenII Prius.
    Sydney, Australia. HV battery started throwing error codes at 280,000 k (174,000 miles).
    Replaced one module. Drove for a week then started throwing more errors. Bought a battery from wreckers from 2007 Prius with 75,000 k for $750. Car is now running like new. Was averaging 5.4-5.5L/100K, now getting 4.8L/100K (49mpg ). Mainly start stop city driving.
    Old battery is going through a rebuild. Looks like it is in a bad way. I will possibly have to buy 4 more modules.

    Just a late update although I think this thread is long dead.134000 miles and my rebuild seems to be holding up fine.Fingers crossed.Still getting good mileage around 54 mpg.

    This is UART's survey and he was trying to find a way to remove the survey bias inherent in the fact that readers of PriusChat will tend to be those with battery issues. His result of 15% is way higher than <5% failure rate reported by Consumer Reports at that time. Our surveys here always seem to suggest relatively high % batt failure rates for Gen2's compared to other sources, but our sample size is small and not random. Toyota is not talking, so we don't really know.

    If it helps, my 2005 is upwards of 277,000 miles and still going on the original hybrid battery. 12v has been changed once. I am very surprised that it has lasted this long...

    The 2008 Prius is at 144,000 and going strong as well.

    The traction battery in our 2006 failed at 125,000 miles and was replaced under warranty before the car was totaled in an accident.
    The traction battery in our 2008 that replaced it appears to still be just fine. It turned 110,000 miles yesterday.

    Here's maybe how we could conduct a new survey:

    Whoever owns a Gen3 2010, when did they come out? Let's say if that was Sept_09 the 2010's are approaching 7 years old now. Seems to me we have only have slightly greater than zero USA-reported Gen3 batt fails, but I think Gen2 probably had much more by 7 years.

    2005 with 227k miles HV warning lights. Trouble shooting showed 1 bad module and I replaced the pair with good used modules. No balancing or charging has been about 1k miles and runs good.

    2008 with 153,000 miles. Original battery showing no signs of wear.
