I'd wait on adding batteries. The trade-in value plus you're getting the time to save your money until the 2017 PiP (or Volt or cheaper BMW i3 REX) comes in to see how much range (and better battery chemistry) has increased. Also Leaf 2nd Gen will also be out as might the Tesla 3. Who knows, maybe even Entunes will be usable by then.

Sixteen lead-acid car batteries in the back would also work.

What's a little off gassing hydrochloric acid, as long you're range increases .... just don't light up unless you are 20 feet away.

And now the PiP will be hydrogen powered as well!

These reasons were once touted as the "proof" of why electric cars will never be practical.

Lucky you to get an Advanced. I wanted one and there were none available.

Anyway, I think the whole EV range discussion is really almost moot WRT PIP. I think it's better to think of the PIP as having a really big battery that leads to better fuel economy -- how much better simply depends on your driving habits. I drove 55 miles mostly hwy yesterday on a full battery and got 67 MPG. Coming back without recharge I got 53 MPG. My 2005 Prius averaged 47 MPG. So overall I'm happy. Obviously, in-town driving where I can recharge more often gets me much higher mileage.

When I was researching PIP vs. Volt, the review comment that most struck me was "The Prius is a better vehicle. The Volt is a better ELECTRIC vehicle."

Whether you bought the right car for your needs is something only you can decide.

I've always had a bit of a problem with mixing plug-in power and gasoline power. They are two different power sources, therefore MPGe is a bit of a meaningless term in my opinion.

When you say "99MPGe," it gives the impression that you are getting 99 miles out of a gallon of gasoline, when in fact, you are fudging it with an additional power source, which is conceptually the same as roping your car to a truck on the freeway.

Wait a minute, wasn't there a guy rebuilding a PiP with parts from a junked HS250h. I believe it was Bill the Engineer and he was going to mate the HS250h drive motor to the PiP.

Wonder how far along he is?

Exactly! You get improved MPG from plugging in.

That's why it is promoted as a PLUG-IN HYBRID, rather than having any type of "electric" label.

I hate to wake you up , but plug in hybrid is a electric label in it's own right!

OK, I'm going to get some flack for saying this, but plugging in does not increase MPG; specifically "miles per gallon." If anything, the miles traveled from gasoline will decrease slightly from the added weight.

The actual miles you get from a gallon of gasoline doesn't increase, however you will get extra miles as a result of the energy stored in the battery.

    Two separate things.
    Rant over.
