2010 Prius Inverter failed at 111k in Virginia - help, part backordered and bill is $4000

Thanks for looking up this information. I don't have this letter and what you just mentioned gives me (or anyone else that didn't complete the recall) an unlimited mileage warranty on the inverter.

Since I'm in CA, I already have a 150k miles warranty, but if I can avoid the dealer, I can extend that 150k mile warranty if I don't complete the recall. The downside.............I can breakdown somewhere down the road when the inverter fails.

 

My letter on the second page has a paragraph titled "What if you live in California and don't have this Safety Recall Campaign performed?"

You might want to read it. Not sure if it does or doesn't apply to this recall.

What if you live in California and don’t have this Safety Recall Campaign performed?

The State of California requires the completion of Safety Recalls/Service Campaigns on emission related parts
prior to vehicle registration renewal. In addition, the State requires that every vehicle must pass an emission
test (SMOG Check) every two years and before it is sold. Without the completion of this no charge Safety
Recall Campaign the California Air Research Board (CARB) will not allow your vehicle to be registered. State
of California regulations require Toyota to provide the Department of Motor Vehicles with a record of all
vehicles that have not had the Safety Recall Campaign completed.

There is no requirement of a smog check every 2 years on the Prius car in CA. I guess when push comes to shove, I'll do the recall.

 

I thought hybrids were exempt from smog checks? Does the DMV really cross check registrations with recalls from car companies? I can't imagine they are that technologically advanced.

 

It's exempt in CA, many states still have inspections on the Prius. Yes the DMV is involved in recalls, that's how they know where the registered owners are.
