    Surprised to see maximum speed as a comparison criteria. PIP is hanging right after big boys like BMW I8 and Tesla at 112 MPH :)

    Compare Plug-Ins | Inside EVs

    Setting aside discussions like PIP is not designed for top speed, Tires are not rated for hat speed etc etc, what is the Maximum speed anyone aware of ?

    I am aware of 110 mph displayed (actual should be 108?? ) in a controlled HPDE environment...

    Not so fast.

    Tesla = 120 mph
    BMW I8 =155 mph
    PiP = in the dust.

    I would take those results with a grain of sand. I have had my Leaf at triple digit speeds, confirmed by GPS.

    That great news...Nissan leaf was shown with a max speed of 90 mph in that comparison. May be PIP can go faster than 112 mph :)

    In earlier Prius, top speed was 6000 RPM for M/G2, which is the limit its bearings are good for. I bet the software does not let you exceed the safe RPM. For the land speed record Prius, they used larger tires, so the bearings did not spin faster.

    I could not Google any nomograph for the Gen 3 or PIP. (only Gen 1 and Gen 2)

    The max speed for the Gen 3 MG2 is 13500 RPM. It also has a speed reduction unit between MG2 and the drive shaft. The combination still limits the top speed to 112 mph.

    Does the Prius have override on speed? Was wondering after certain speed the engine automatically cut off for safety reason. I thought that was the law dealer have to put in place. I'm not sure

    The top speed is limited in software on all Prius models, as I recall.
    I do not think there is a cutoff, just a govenor.
    I am unaware of any car where the dealer sets the top speed, usually it is drag limited or the manufacturer sets the top speed.

    If I just defocus my eyes and think you guys are talking kilometers per hour, I can keep right up with you ;)

    Think I read somewhere, at certain speed it just starts retarding the timing? So you press harder, but nothing much happens?

    I read somewhere that cars sold in the USA have speed governors based on the OEM tires used. Not scientific, but back around 2007, Al Gore III made the news when he was stopped for doing 100 mph in a Prius and drugs were found in his car. I would have to be on some on some kind of mind-altering substance to be going that fast on a public road with all the idiot drivers we have in So Cal. Save it for the track. Also around that time Steve Wozniak was ticketed for going 104 in a Prius on I-5, and told the judge he confused kilometers with miles due to recently driving in Europe. His fine was $700.

    When the term "governor" is used here, it is important to note we are not talking about a mechanical device which limits the speed. It's all in the control software. Recall that the throttle on a Prius is just an input device to the control computer. If you reach the maximum speed programmed into the control computer, further pressing on the throttle is just plain ignored. Sort of like how Toyota put in a modification in response to the "stuck throttle" hoopla, which disables the throttle if the brake is applied.

    The story I heard about Al Gore had him in Oregon, I believe. Apparently, it made the cop's day back in the cop shop when he told them that he pulled over the former Vice-President of the United States. And word is that the ticket was paid without being contested.

    The reference I made was to the son of the former VP, and the jurisdiction was Orange County, as he was on the San Diego (I-5) freeway in Laguna Niguel. I do not know the disposition of the drug case or the speeding violation, which would probably warrant a charge of reckless driving. Up to the district attorney.
    A bit further off topic, a friend was a CHP officer assigned as a driver for former President Reagan, back when he was governor of California. The 2 car motorcade, including Reagan's personal station wagon, was in route from his Santa Ynez ranch to his L.A. home when a rookie CHP officer initiated a traffic stop for speeding. The security detail in the chase vehicle tried to signal that they were law enforcement officers, showing badges, etc. but he wasn't buying it. They stopped, and when the officer radioed in about having the governor pulled over, a news person heard it on a scanner and the word was out. Rumor had it that the rookie was then assigned to someplace like Death Valley. :p Edited the earlier post to point out that Al Gore III was driving a Prius at 100 mph. :oops:

    Hmmm. The one I found was a Korean film about a saintly cop playing a robber in a police training film.
