Toyota why is the mpg readout not accurate?????

Through what mechanism do you propose?

 

I have a 2014 Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring. Same for it as well. Sometimes it is close, sometimes it is not. Probably depends on how full you get the tank I would think.

I have a Ford Fusion. It's numbers are a bit high too.
I occasionally visit the Volt forum too. Same reports there.
Same thing with my ICE only Malibu and Elantra.

To the OP: Get used to it.
Do you think the manufacturers would purposely cause the display to read LESS than the actual mileage ??

Our second gen Civic hybrid always slightly underestimated mileage. One good thing I can say about it...

Yeah it would be nice if Toyo would 'fess up. Ours is roughly 8% optimistic.

 

If you realize the mpg reads high and you have checked for a number tanks of gas... the problem is solved. You are now calibrated and can read the mpg knowing it is 5% or so high. Use your valuable time to worry about something else

It is just a guideline. Whether it reads over or under, you want to maximize it. The exact mpg is only good for bragging rights. It is probably not possible to get it much closer. The temperature of the gasoline would have to be taken into account (both going in and coming out) , as would your elevation, air temperature and the mechanical condition of your car. I suppose if you were willing to pay a few thousand more the car, Toyota could make the mpg a bit more accurate. 5% seems pretty good, considering....

 

On my list of concerns this ranks very low.

And actually, I find my readings to be fairly accurate.

 

I would like to see them correct this as well. I accept the fact that 50mpg=48MPG in the real world but a simple software fix would give me warm fuzzies.

It would be nice if the MPG was more accurate, but I also agree that it is a relatively minor annoyance. From what I can tell the more important things like speed and distance traveled seem to be almost right on. This is compared to my wife's old Honda Odyssey where the speedo and odometer are both about 10% off.

 

My speedometer reads 2 mph high at 60 mph. While this is pretty typical my 2004 Highlander exactly matched the GPS speed.

We have this same conversation on the UK Prius forums - a lot.

The way I explain it is this. Take a set of scales, one from your kitchen and one from a laboratory. But one costs $10 and one costs $10,000. How can that be as they're both scales? One measures to within +/-5% and the other measures to within 0.0000005%.

Same with the Prius fuel consumption computer. They could make it 0.5% accurate but it'd cost $100. I'll stick with the 5% accurate one for $2.

I've been logging mpg for around 45000 km. I also note what the car tells me. It's never remotely close. The average error is around 8%. The least is around 6%, the worst near 10%. That's not due to limits of accuracy, that's an intentional spin on Toyota's part.

Sure you can take it with a grain of salt. Just like when you contend with any perennial BS'r.

 

FWIW, the MID milage numbers for our 2014 Prius-4 seem to be rather consistently 5% optimistic:

• 50.8(MID)/48.5(tank) = 1.05
• 51.7(MID)/49.4(tank) = 1.05
• 50.0(MID)/47.9(tank) = 1.04
• 47.0(MID)/44.6(tank) = 1.05
• 50.6(MID)/48.4(tank) = 1.05
• 46.2(MID)/43.4(tank) = 1.06
• 47.8(MID)/45.4(tank) = 1.05
• 47.5(MID)/45.2(tank) = 1.05

and when I sum all the MID numbers and all the tank numbers, and divide the results, I get an *average* MID/tank ratio of 1.050.
