In-dash Nav Unit: Video input?

Digging up an old thread (funny how search works like that).

Does the VTR get disabled when the vehicle is in motion? Does the speed sensor hack work to override this?

 

I'd like to know if the VTR option appears on the 2012 Prius Plug-in as well. Thanks

 

I ordered the cable now, and I have also ordered the camera I plan to use on the front:

I plan to supply power and trigger the camera by using the front driving lights. When I turn the lights on manually, and select the "vtr" input, I should be able to get a view of what's directly under the front bumper.

 

I think "VTR" is meant to stand for "Video Tape Recorder" which is a reference to the type of equipment which may have been attached to the video inputs of similar display units a few years ago.

 

Wouldn't you rather just flick a switch on the dash to access the front camera rather than going through menus to select a video source?

Heres my idea. its a 3 way switch to share the same video input for the factory reverse cam. do you think it would work?

essentially it is a reverse cam anytime with a 2nd camera .

 

That's a great idea, and if anyone has had any luck making something like this work, Please let us know.

I thought about something similar to that, but I'm not crazy about putting in a switch. My idea of using the driving lights to power the cam is simpler. I realize it might be cool to view the reverse cam while you are driving, but I don't see much value in doing that, and I think there may be a software lockout which prevents it.

I have a few other issues:

• It's a lot of extra work to tap the power lead to the backup cam, and to run wires back to the switch.
• Same for the power lead to the front cam.
• I'm planning to also install a camera near the passenger-side mirror, to view the curb and traffic on my right side. I plan to power this through the right turn-signal switch, if I can get a constant voltage when the lever is activated.
• There is also a lockout which prevents viewing video through the VTR input when the car is in motion. I may have to purchase an extra bypass module from Beat-Sonic.

 

Sometimes I can't see what's behind me when I'm driving because of the high back.

I have realised my electronics diagram is not correct when wiring the switch.

Are you sure there is a software lockout for the reverse cam input? I thought when in reverse, the cam and head unit receives power from the reverse circuit, which overrides the display. When not in reverse no power to the cam and nothing displayed. Theoretically if you share the same video input and apply power the head unit will think you are in reverse and display the powered cam, anytime.
