Hello, My youngest daughter is purchasing my best friend's 2004 Prius. He has followed all regular maintenance and I know it has been well cared for. I am curious if there is some things that I should have checked out before she starts driving it? It has 108,000 miles on it. Thanks in advance.
If it's your best friend's car, this should be easy and painless. Other than routine oil changes, you can do the following so you can feel your youngest daughter has a well maintained car. 100k - coolant change 120k - spark plugs and PCV valve transaxle fluid change every 60k change brake fluid (some people don't do this) check for leak in the engine water pump and cracks in belt check for leaks in the struts and shocks check the voltage on the 12v battery At the current mileage, the car may be burning some oil. Make sure your daughter knows how to check the oil level in the car (I would say every month, like paying rent), top off as needed.
If the HV battery has not been replaced, you should set aside some money so that when the battery needs replacing, you would have the funds available. The battery will normally last between 8-10 years in hotter climates and slightly longer in cooler climates.
