Arguments for superiority of hybrids

after 400,000 miles the car is still worth like 5K at trade in. I was reading a post on prius that went over 300,000 miles on original traction batt. and there are a few that have gone well over 400k and even one 500k still on original traction batt. if the car still works properly its still worth some $. of course if you take it to the salvage yard you will not get much.

 

My F250 4x4 sits at home alone now, I feel so wastefull when I drive it and get less than 10 mpg. but I can pull 34' fifthwheel and wife + 4 children fit so I just multiply the mpg by 6 and then I feel a little better.

 

are you sure about that, I wonder why the ford hybrids cant get the epa, and toyota and honda can go well over epa. Is there something in writing that describes the state of charge to do the test. possibly the smaller batt in the toyota hybrid gives a more realistic mpg.

I like my Prius I based my purchase on owning it for 5 years and getting to 160,000 miles head to head with my nissan juke the gas savings did it for me went from 1195 a month to 800 just based on gas and payment this is my everyday commuter car

They would be more interesting if they didn't contain so much fiction. The pattern of selecting features from different car models, combining them into one non-existent model, and presenting it as a real car available today, is very misleading. Especially to newcomers to the forum.

And it keeps happening repeatedly.

 

One mans trash is another mans treasure.... I wish I had a shop so I could burn my leftover (waste) oil form all sources in waste heater to keep me warm while I tinker...

 

Unless you are super unlucky and trash your battery *completely* at the same time as your car body, you will likely be left with a large battery bank which although marginal for running a car, is perfect for a storage system for your PV solar system!

$7000 difference -> 1,897 gallons of gas (at $3.69 per) -> 154,755 miles (given the 0.012 more gallons per mile required by the Focus over the Prius). I drive my cars into the ground, and I would be very disappointed to only get 154,755 miles out of one (generally I get over 225,000, and they die from salt corrosion)

Well if you find it interesting to be consistently lied to, I'm sure there are several people on numerous blogs that you'd find interesting.

 

Looking at eBay's "completed" sales I don't see any 400,000 mile Priuses selling for $5000..... the person who made that claim is exercising hyperbole'. The typical price for that age/mileage is $1000-1500. (The dealer will give you a paltry $500.)I also don't see that Prius is any lower maintenance cost than, say, a Honda Civic. Their service scheduled are basically identical, except Prius has an extra inverter/battery coolant flush.Now that ford will be offering 3-cylinder Focus at an estimated 37 combined, you can buy a car as roomy as a Prius but only $19,000 (taxed). Even though Prius gets better fuel economy, it would take ~270,000 miles for gas savings to overcome the 6-to-7 thousand dollar gap of the Priuses' higher cost.

I'm not aware of any $15,000 Nissan or Civic that comes with lane departure. That's typically a premium option.

The Honda Insight has leather-wrapped steering wheel and costs only $19000. That's about as cheap as you will find in a hybrid.

 

Assuming, of course, that fuel prices don't go up in the next decade. Anyone believe that?

 

And assuming he's not misrepresenting this 3 cyl Focus. I just can't understand why he bought a Prius or if he even bought a Prius??? Nearly every statement he makes is about a car being a better deal than the Prius but he supposedly goes out and buys a Prius??????? Not logical Will Robinson.

Had a Firebird once that musta had that "lane departure" option because the steering was so sensitive that if you took your hands off the wheel you would automatically shift over a lane tout suit , as the Italians say! Not sure I'd pay extra for it, though.

As to the 270,000 miles payback , well we're at 20,000 so only 250,000 to go. At this rate, I figure another 20-30 years and we'll have 'er licked! (As Maybel said in a different context, "It seems so long...")

the prius c is quiet different than most cars. it has no timing belt. How often do you have to change the timing belt on a honda civic. and you might as well change the water pump while you do the timing belt and so goes the story. my car has no belts.

 

Civics don't have timing belts either. They have one less maintenance item than a Prius (no hybrid fluid flush).

Yeah if gas rises to $5 then the payoff time for Prius premium (versus Focus at $19000) will 185,000 miles. I bought the Prius because it has cool technology, despite its higher cost.

The Ford Focus 44mpg car is on my "to buy" list for late 2014 or 2015..... though I actually prefer the $15,000 Fiesta (cheaper)

prius c 2014 from 19,080, honda civic hatch msrp from 18,190. That is 890 dollars, I think the epa combined mpg is a little over 10 mpg difference. that would work out to less than 40,000 miles with gas at 3.65 a gallon? We can't both be correct. Im confident in my figures. We also didn't consider that honda finance is 2.49% for 5 years and Toyoa is 0% that will save more than the $890, I think the intrest works out to $1132 so the total cost of a civic + finance=19322 so the prius c2 will be less expensive from the first payment.

 

I think numbers can be manipulated lots of ways to justify whichever choice you make. I bought my Prius because I wanted one. Was looking for something cheap to replace the pickup truck with my wife in school, and would have been bored with a Focus. I wanted a hybrid, and I believe the Prius to be one of the best made.

I have no need to feel that my choice is superior to anyone else's, and if others don like them that's fine too.

 

sorry I guess I got way off topic with my posts. I have given rides and encourage others to drive both our camry and prius c hybrids, show someone the mpg if they don't care then I just drop it. I have found that the hybrids are great and I let them know how I feel and that is the end of it.

If they ask questions I try to be as honest as possible. even though I could say I get over 99 mpg on trips across town and that would be true, but not as honest as saying I get over 60 mpg on tanks in warm weather and about 50 in winter. that way they don't buy one and not get mpg they expect, that would be bad. so dont be bad be good and straight forward.
