40psi improved ride height & responsiveness

have you ever seen a radial tire worn out in the middle and still good on the edges? especially on a front wheel drive. I have only seen one set of tires wear out in the middle and that was on my brothers pickup the tires were weird and you could see the center portion was higher in the middle and the side lugs were lower. I run my tires on prius c at 50 with no noticeable wear and only about 5k, I have ran my tires at max sidewall pressure for many years on lots of cars and have never had one wear out in the middle. the front end of cars will tend to wear out the shoulder first. I don't know everything about tires but I do know they will work fine with max sidewall psi.

 

Every tire is different. If they are running around with higher PSI, and you chose to be closer to what the "normal" PSI, so be it. As long as you check your tires every month or so for even tread wear, it should be OK. I ran my good year assurance at 42 PSI, even at 36,500 miles they have 4/32 tread left. Tread wear was even on all 4 tires. This is just one of those things you have to test in the real world and keep an eye on. If the OP is saying it improved the ride and responsiveness, it probably did. That's not an outrages claim to make , nor does it need scientific proof of validity. After all, its his/her butt in the drivers seat. I'm sure they can tell if there was any improvement.

Yes, tires that are under inflated and over inflated can cause uneven tread wear. But what was the PSI at in those tires? How long was it ran for to make them look like that? I'm sure you can tell when the tires aren't responding well due to being under inflated and the harsher (than normal) ride when being over inflated.

 

You don't "know" any such thing.

Your rather limited experiences do NOT represent all of the possible combinations of cars and tires in the entire world.

Therefore, it is entirely possible, and even likely I think based on MY experiences, that some tire models on some cars will indeed show abnormal and undesirable wear when inflated to the max. shown on the sidewall.........when that is not the pressure recommended for that application.

 

its true its true, the tires do work fine with the max sidewall psi "my limited experiences" there are many on this site and many more who pull trailers or haul heavy loads that inflate their tires to max sidewall. I have driven many cars, pickups and trailers with radial tires. I have been driving for 30 years and with the exception of picking up a nail or screw in the tread, all other tire problems have been the edge wearing before the middle or the sidewall, both of these issues are maginified by lower tire pressuer. The psi a tire should have is mostly due to the weight on that tire and if the tire is under inflated it will cause damage to the tire. the psi listed by auto makers are enough to keep the tire from overheating with the weight of your car. if the tire has more psi then it has less friction in the sidewall and will heat up less, heat is the major cause of tire problems. my .02
