I'm running a 120V. and a 240V. outlet out to the driveway. I've been using the factory cable for level one charging and want to step up. Where do I find a 240V cable or adapter? Which 240 V socket do I want on the outlet? The electrician will put in any socket I can name, but I don't know which one we normally use. I called my local Toyo dealer this afternoon and they don't sell a 240 V Pip cable, don't think one exists, so no help there...
Of course not, Toyota provides only Level I EVSE as standard means of recharging. For a 240 VAC (Level II) you will have to have your EVSE modified for that purpose.
You can get your existing cable modified so that it will plug into a standard 240v dryer outlet. Or you can get an L2 charging station (many sources) hard-wired and it will have the same J1772 connector on the side that plugs into the car. I think a third choice is a charging station that plugs into the dryer outlet. For outdoors I'd opt for the hard-wired charging station for two reasons. Safety and theft protection. Mike
Check out evseupgrade.com Many here have sent their original Toyota EVSE to them for modification so it can run on 240v or 120v. It's inexpensive compared to a stand alone L2 EVSE and it works great. You'll full charge your PIP in 1.5hrs! FWIW- EVSEUpgrade returns the upgraded unit to you with a L6-20 twist lock plug for 240v use.
In addition to the suggestions above, I want to mention that 240V OEM Toyota EVSE brick cords do exist, because they must... in any 240V country where the PiP gets sold. The Eurozone, for example. I'm sure they have junkyards over there that sell good used parts over the Internet. Any Euro-PiPper care to comment?
They do, indeed, exist, because that's what my UK car was supplied with. Takeup over here has been low, so I doubt you would find a spare used one easily, but a new OEM one should be available if the dealer uses a bit of gumption. May not be the most logical answer, though; a charger outside with the electronics built in and a tethered cord might make more sense, unless there is anywhere else that you use the 240v brick. Over here, there was a government-funded one on offer, so (despite us being 240v anyway) I got this for free. It's supplied by Chargemaster, so presumably is available over there too.
For permanent outdoor installation, I would put a proper EVSE from a company like Clipper Creek. The factory cord is not really meant to be left outdoors and is difficult to secure against theft. That said, getting your existing cable is the cheapest option.
I did the EVSEUPGRADE way two years ago. Has worked really well and cost me 1/8 the cost of a permanent 240. Which I may add the PiP really doesn't pull that many kWh even on the 240. I think we top off around 1.9 kwh.
Just noticed that the original poster is in NY so this is a good time to mention that NY has a 50% EVSE credit, so keep your receipts for the installation and parts, and you can get 50% back on next year's taxes. Might make it worthwhile to go with a nice 30-40amp permanent installation...
