Low Rolling Resistance replacement tires: Current List

Good number crunching there. On their site, the Energy Saver is merely and "passenger car" tire, while the Premier is more of a "touring" tire, which typically are of higher quality. Again, could be mere marketing by them, but if Costco has the Premier for only $2 more / tire, I'm likely going to end up with them. If nothing else, due to the way they market its ability to shed water effectively throughout the life of the tire and my living in the PNW.

 

Can you elaborate on this? If the Premier have higher ratings and as a touring tire rather than as a passenger tire like the Energy Savers, wouldn't the Premier be better tires?

 

The Premier could be an overall better performer but it doesn't mean it beats the Energy Saver in all categories, namely LRR/fuel economy. The Energy Savers were designed specifically for fuel efficiency while sacrificing a little in other categories.

 

Interesting that the Primier is touted as good in wet weather rather than dry. Maybe it is good with fuel efficiency after all and still a better touring tire. Regardless, both are better than my original Goodyear Advantage tires!

 

Hey sorry for the late reply. Ive been back to costco not taking back the tires at this point. Not really going to bother or go thru the aggravation. I had the software recall done and its just now hit or miss. I can go one day 65 miles and get 53mpg's and then the next day drive a different route 30 miles and get 41 mpg. I am very light footed and my tires are set to door pressure. I do not over inflate them. My feelings are it may come back but they are also trying to talk me into a throttle body cleaning at the dealer $99. I said that would only cause ruff idle not loss of mpg's. Going to look at it and see if its dirty. But bottom line I would NOT recommend Ecopia 422's I had 2 sets of Avid S33's and they were great. Lesson learned.

 

I have a 2012 Prius III with Goodyear Assurance tires. They have less then 35K and need to be replaced. I'm looking for good tires, that I will get more mileage out of. Which of the LRR tires can I expect to get a lot of mileage out of?

 

I also just purchased the Ecopia 422 for my 2011 Prius. After 500 miles, my mileage dropped from 48-50 mpg down to 42.5. I'm not sure I'm willing to wait until they're "broken" to see if the mileage returns.

 

I just wanted to report back that i replaced the continental pure contacts because they were not performing to my expectations. I purchased new yokohama avids s33d and had them installed today. Even new and not broken in, the yoko's far exceeded the fuel efficiency of the continentals, even using the continental's best numbers. Yesterday i tested the continentals on a stretch of highway, 3.3 miles on cruise control 60mph, ambient temp 70F. The continentals put up 77. mpg, This morning after installing the yoko's i performed the same test on the exact route for 3.3 miles on cruise control at 60mph ambient temp at 71F and the readout read 82.1 mpg.

 

I can tell you the Avid S33 are far better than the Ecopia 422's. I am regreting this purchase big time. Mileage has not been improving at all. I have played around with air pressure on the same 40 mile round trips I often do and at best I am getting 42mpgs. I don't know what to do at this point. I really dont want to go into costco and complain. But this is just rediculous. I am heading out of town on a 1800 mile round trip that I have done in this prius atleast 15x in past 4 years. I average on that trip from start to finish 49 mpg. I am scared to think it will drop below 40 when I am finished. But if it is I am going to contact bridgestone and/or go back like a really nice and courteous lunatic. Hi yes I drive a car that averages 50-54mpg and I bought tires here 3 months ago and now I am averaging 40mpg. How do you think that will go over? lol

 

I didn't experience a mileage drop when I replaced the Avid S33's with the EP 422's in my previous liftback. One thing I liked about he EP422's was the better ride quality. They rode much softer at the same psi's.

 

I bit the bullet and just purchased the avids at tirerack. I placed the continentals on CL, as slightly used and sold them in one day for 2 bills. I could not live with driving a prius and getting 43-45 mpg. Overall, i'm glad I made that decision even though It was at a loss.

my used 2010 came with Sumitomo htra spo1 195/65/15 480 AA utog last tank was my first 500+ mile and I'm on track with a second 500+ miles tank tires are set at 40psi

tires are in great shape, ton's of depth. So I don't plan on changing tires until its time. not sure if I change tires if id get any really noticeable change

 

Here's a response I got to an email to Michelin (questioning the lack of Energy Saver A/S in 215/45R17), just this morning:

 

Odd that they say 100,000 mile tread warranty in that email when Premier A/S | Michelin Tires says 60,000 mile. Sounds like whoever is working that email account is mixing facts from two different tire lines (the Defender has a 90,000 mile warranty, I still haven't found their mythical 100,000 mile tire)

195/65/15 is 832 RPM (44 PSI max)
205/55/16 is 836 RPM (44 PSI max)
205/50/17 is 828 RPM (50 PSI max)
215/45/17 is 844 RPM (44 PSI max, and has a wider tread width so I'd rather have the 205/50/17)

 

Yes, I think the emailer got confused by metric/imperial: on Canadian Michelin site the warranty is 100,000 kilometers.

Unfortunately for me, using snow tires for around 4 months of the year, it would be hard to take advantage of the tread wear warranty.

 

100,000 KM = 62137.1 Miles so a Northerner that drives a lot gets an extra couple of thousand miles warranty. I've never used a tread wear warranty in my life so I'm not sure that it matters for me either even though I only use a single set of tires all year round.

 

3.3 miles is a rather short distance to do a comparison.... I'm sorry to hear you gave up on your Pure Contact tires. I've been very pleased with mine all the way around. I just did a 250 mile trip to Chicago and got 54 MPG driving 70 MPH most of the way. It was a little lower coming back because I was driving 74 MPH into a headwind.
A Prius won't get 82 MPG without some serious hypermiling and running a lot on electric. I would be curious what your battery charge level was before and after those two trips....
