I wish people in Australia could master the concept that the shiny thing shows them stuff that's behind them.

Here, they definitely do. That, and people with kids in their car. Driving in the Prius and in other cars, and with and without the kids, I really notice the difference.

Yes, I think you're absolutely right here.

Likely so, but it at least would have been an attempt at getting out of the situation, and I would feel more justified in calling 911 at that point. Film is great evidence, after the fact, but doesn't help immediately.

I'm not that keen on city driving, and I'm spoiled by working at home and not having to go anywhere. The average skill level isn't so much the problem, as the aggression. Taxi drivers can generally be counted on to do something stupid, as can the muchos machos in their lifted trucks. There are enough clueless newbies and nervous oldsters to cause a few hazards for everyone, but I can generally make it to wherever I'm going without much drama. It's the highway driving I really like, though I'm careful to avoid long weekends where it's a race to the cabin on Friday night, and another race back to the city on Monday night. I've had my fair share of speeding tickets, so I'm not a slow driver, and this little Prius does surprisingly well with such a tiny engine. The first Summer we had it, I drove across the country and back. One quiet morning in the middle of Saskatchewan, family sound asleep, camping gear packed tightly so it didn't rattle, I decided to see what the top speed was. Traffic was minimal and conditions were excellent. With a smooth, straight road and steady acceleration, we got up to 173 kmh. Lifting off the gas, I was impressed with how quiet the car was - barely any wind noise, just floating along, wifey still snoring - I don't think I've ever even told her this story.

So, my experience driving in Canada is the opposite of yours in Australia. Here, it's city bad, highway good.

I think our poor-quality city driving is disguised by the fact that it's impossible to go fast. Crawling traffic really does disguise a multitude of sins.

Haha...I have no idea. I'm sure it went to zero right after I lifted off the accelerator, though, and we did coast a surprisingly long way. Maybe with such an extreme 'pulse and glide', we got even better mileage?
