It does appear that the PIP is not included.

I agree with the posters who are not concerned. On the contrary, we should be happy that Toyota has come to care enough to find and repair problems which result from design flaws before we discover them. Perhaps Toyota was too slow before, but now we should sent them a collective "attaboy" (and or attagirl). Some say stay way because of the recalls. I say that makes the car even more desireable!

Even the best of cars are never perfect. Let he or she who is perfect cast the first stone.

These recalls are like patch releases in software products. Such products are very complex, and even though the vendor has done a thorough job of testing, things will come up, and the vendor responds with patches which they push to the users. Just as there are safety issues for cars, there are security issues for software products, which have to be addressed quickly. And in this case, it actually IS a software patch, albeit for an embedded system (the software itself is not the product, but rather it is embedded in another device which in turn is the product).

Yes, á la Tesla Model S.

I went to check my VIN and the website said it was down during updating. Ironic?

i was at the dealership today to have them check the swaying issue on my PiP. they checked the computers and said the recall does not include my 2013 PiP. i still have an issue with the yaw motion on the rear end. it is bothering me.

Proof(?) the recall does not include the PiP. This document gives all the details.

    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM450071/RCDNN-14V053-0945.pdf

On page 2 it says the VDS part of the VIN for the recall is KN3DU. My 2012 Three trade-in has that as part of its VIN. My 2012 PiP VIN shows KN3DP and checking on the recall page it is not being recalled as others have reported for their PiPs.

The document referenced gives a very interesting history of how the problem was located and resolved. It is a very good example of how intermittent problems ave very difficult to analyze and fix. I'll try to remember that when my darn Dish Hopper messes up again. I know! off topic :)

My Sept. build PiP 2013 also has KN3DP in the VIN.

Thanks for posting that, very informative.

Here's the main take away for me:

    Capture.PNG

Telmo (in the other thread that has since disappeared), had said that the Plug-in Prius wasnt included because of its use of a Li battery. Although the text above refers to the Prius V, I think the main point is that the regular Prius, because of its use of NiMH, may be providing more "boost" than the PiP when the battery temperature is high, which leads to thermal stress on the IGBT. Since the PiP uses a Li battery, it's probably more conservative when battery temps are high.

I just got my recall notice in the mail for my 2014, so it looks like PiP is included.

interesting... Did you run your VIN here?
I ran my VIN when the initial recall was released but nothing. Ran it again after seeing your post, still nothing!

Was this an official recall notice from Toyota Motor Corporation, as opposed to a notice from a Toyota dealership? There have been reports of dealers taking it on themselves to send notices to their Prius customers, not bothering to check if the specific VIN is mentioned in the Toyota database. Anything to get you into their service department, and maybe find something else (!) that needs attention.

Yes it was an official TMC notice, not from the dealer.

They messed up then. The PiP is confirmed to not be part of the recall.

Hi retired4999, I didn't run my VIN. My car is still pretty new (about 3400 miles) so I was planning to have the work done when I bring it in for the first service. From reading the letter, it sounds like the greatest risk is when you accelerate really hard-- something as a die-hard Prius driver I'd never do (unless I had to for safety reasons)!

Perhaps with all the recall mania going on with GM and TMC's recent mega-fine, they decided to play it safe and extend the recall to the 40,000 or so PiPs that are rolling around the world?
