They should make a new one and drive the prius c around town in 25-35 speed zones if they drive in those speed zones and just keep driving they will end up with a mpg fig. like 75mpg and compair a diesel in that type of driving. and say diesels are likely to become extinct.

Electric cars don't make ideal taxis.

The ideal taxi can be driven around the clock--a plug-in only accumulates range at 10 to 20 mph while it's plugged and not earning its keep.

Tried driving the girlfriends 09 Corolla to work for a week…same commute, speeds, etc… Prius usually gets 58 going due to the avg. speed being 30 and some elevation changes and 52 coming home Her car did 38.7 going and 41 coming home..no traffic on the return trip.

Paid $22k out the door for my Prius with 18 miles on the odo. 4 oil changes at the dealer, 2 of which were under ToyotaCare and 2 which I paid $64 for and 1 set of tires at $268 shipped(install was free at work) no brake services and I'll probably be replacing the 12V as the current one is corroded vs.

her Corolla was $19k OTD new and now has 54k miles and has had 1 set of tires ($300), oil changed every 5k ($30 each), 1 brake job ($200+) and is coming up on its second due to the shitty traffic and no regen.

Not hating on diesel as our work trucks are diesels and do amazing at towing 10k lbs and getting 16-17mpg while doing it and 22 empty. Just because the entry price is cheaper doesn't mean it will be cheaper long term, and buying a car for a lot isn't purely a financial decisions hence why we have Bentley, Rolls, Ferrari, etc….

I saw a MB 250 Bluetec parked in a "employee of the month" space at Sears at the local mall yesterday afternoon. I highly doubt that the Bluetec owner actually worked at Sears. I'm sure the owner only parked there because the space was really close to the entrance. Rich SOB. The owner was taking a big risk - some people would key a car for that indiscretion.

Sd, your car is such a baby, I would not expect anything to go wrong with your car for some time to come.
My reference to I LIKE THE WAY YOU TALK, that was from the movie SLING BLADE.
I meant that I like the way you put things into perspective. You said just because the entry price is cheaper, doesn't mean it will be cheaper long term. I'm thinking a Honda Fit would fall into that category .

Actually it's possible, i worked at sears all throughout college. The store manager makes bank with high sales numbers. Out store manager drove a mercedes SLK. Some of the mid-level managers probably make about $60k a year. The optometrist makes good money, but they are independent. Some of the appliance sales people make upwards of $50k-$60k a year due to incredible sales and commissions. They have to be good. I was making about $15 an hour in electronics selling tv's and stuff. Electronics got really competitive when i left, sears was going to more of a non-commission hourly model due to low margins on electronics.

I doubt that the store manager would be using the employee of the month space. I suppose the store manager could be making enough to lease a $60K sedan.

The EOM spaces are reserved for hourly workers recognized for above and beyond performance. And it's more cost effective to give one of these overachieving schmucks a parking space and their photo on the wall than a raise. Show me the money!

I was a floor salesman for a short time at a Sears in a mall in the mid 80s selling computers, typewriters, binoculars, and what have you. The IBM PCs were primitive back then and I don't recall selling a single one.

And in Europe you can also buy an Auris HSD with the same powertrain for near 1/3 of the price of the E250.

I wouldn't judge who would be able to drive what car. some people have husbands/wives who may have a different profesion. really there are so many ways someone working at sears could drive a 60k car. so who cares

but if someone damages their car because they make false judgements that is really lame!(n)

The title of this post is a lie. The Toyota hybrid system is indeed ahead of the rest of the auto industry. It seems that the key to Toyota's dominance in the hybrid market is due to a couple of key things, dependability, price, and performance. Toyota has been carful to not over state mpg, and they have sold so many hybrids compaired to the rest of auto mfg's. Prius is toyota's best selling hybrid and is most certainly King.

My wife has a camry hybrid xle, and I have a prius c. while these fall on both sides of the prius, the reason we even considerd a hybrid was due to the popularity of the prius. While some biased evaluation of a car vs the prius may give the avantage to a different car. but if you are looking at mpg in a car that works for most of americia Prius wins.

nothing without a plug in compairs

I said I wouldn't be surprised IF someone keyed the MB. Not that it would be inevitable. The Sears happens to be in an upscale area where the MB was "illegally" parked. So very unlikely that someone would do it.

And.......come on now, be realistic. What are the chances that the "employee of the month" or their spouse, kid, cousin, etc. at an individual Sears store would drive a $60K auto to work? Slim to none I'd wager. Honey? Would it be alright if I borrowed your Mercedes to drive to work today? Phffffffft.

Keep in mind, this is just all in good fun based on something I actually saw. Now I wish I had taken my phone out and taken a photo of it. A picture is worth a thousand words.

The chances are slim, not none. Some of the kids I went to school with were given very expensive cars as a graduation present. Some people who make really good money loose there jobs, yet they still have their expensive cars and home. I guess the point I am making is, if you don't know you don't know. Some cars I have had in the past would make people feel sorry for me. I owned a car that cost me 400 it had been in a wreck, I bought it frome someone who really needed money. The car had duct tape holding the bumper together and leaked/burned a quart of oil a week with less than 100 miles. I had a diesel rabbit I got for 450 it had shifting issues and would smoke like crazy at startup. I started feeling embaresed driving it to the hospital I work at. one cold day it made a really big smoke cloud and a nurse coming to her car was caught in the smoke, she came out coughing and angry. I make very good money compaired to most people. I think it is fun to have a car that you could care less if someone scratches or door dings it. I leave them unlocked windows down in summer they are carefree in that way. now I drive a car that is in perfect shape and that is nice in other ways. I still make the same amount of money as I did before yet a very different car. so how can you know? someone who makes 6 figures wouldn't have a POS car or would they?

Actually i know someone that makes 6 figures and they're pretty frugal. They only buy used cars( like a camry) and run them till they need lots of work.

When i worked at sears, one of the mid level managers was in her 40's and was a retired cop. 20 years on the force and she gets a pension which is 50% of her end paying salary(most cops will work crazy overtime their last few months to bump up that number). She couldn't keep fighting people on the street at her age, but she was fine being a manager dealing with disgruntled customers. So with her pention and her sears salary, she was probably making around $70k-$80k a year combined. Add that to the fact that her husband was a high ranking cop probably making a little more than that, they probably brought in over $180k a year combined. She drove a slightly used cadillac escalade to work back when all the rappers drove them and everyone wanted one. They cost the same as a Benz car. Mid level managers could be employee of the month.

As for me, i could afford a much nicer car then a prius. I could buy a bigger house than i have. But i'm frugle, i buy what i need. Not what i can afford. I'd rather blow my money on more memorable activities, my hobbies, and vacations. Being able to leave the house on a whim, and go do something means more to me. I also prefer to live in the country and drive an hour to work, that's why i drive a prius. But i have my subaru for the winter.

I hear this crappy argument all the time. So, what happens when you get the Prius paid off? Additionally, the friggin Fit does not get 38mpg in the city. You took a ton of time to lay out your argument but, you ignored some of the data that didn't support your claim. You took the highest Fit MPG # and pitted it against the lowest Prius MPG #. If your going to make a comparison, take everything into account and be honest.

Even with your flawed logic, after the Prius is paid off, you gain $50+ a month on the lowly basic Fit. Then you have to account for less maintence on the Prius (no drive belts, no starter, no alternator, less brake wear, and the list goes on).
