Talk about an apples to oranges comparison. :ROFLMAO: Way to go Road and Track.

It's akin to comparing a Tesla S to a Nissan Leaf.

What about the actual fuel cost, irrespective of the vehicle price? Is diesel not 20% higher in the USA than regular gas? That's part of the reason I bought a Prius vs jetti tdi or cruz diesel.

Also, doesn't the Merc require a urea solution as well? The solution, if purchased from and installed by the dealer costs quite a bit.

Quite a difference between EPA numbers and R&T numbers. Hm, wonder what MPG numbers are more reliable.
Yes, I do exceed the EPA numbers in my Prius (I can't do it in non-hybrid cars).

    So the MB is king:
    Yep
because it's the king of cost - as it costs over $20k more
because it's the king of crampt / its smaller in cargo area
because it's the king of guzzling / its city EPA is over 20mpg below the Prius
All hail the new king ! !

The comparison should have been between a Jetta TDI and a Prius.

I agree, I do the same. I'm a sad panda when my MPG is EPA rating or lower :(

Guys, I'm driving a Prius. You don't have to convince me. You pay a lot more for the car and you pay more for Diesel. No questions. But still, it's an interested article at least from the technical point of view. It shows that good MPG can be achieved with Diesel Hybrid.

No doubt. Hybrid in general rocks, no matter what :) I personally can't wait until Toyota mates the (near future) fuel cell vehicle with a hybrid technology.

Rich Folks who buy the MB E250 BLUTEC, they don't care.
They will shell out money and say they are SO Green.

Agree, it's like when you are asking about who will buy a Hummer, those who can pay for the car and pay for one gallon of gas every 8 miles.

Almost twice the price for a 0.2 mpg difference. Where do I sign up?

Well, 924 miles in one tank is IMPRESSIVE. One thing that I don't like from the Prius is the small gas tank capacity. And to be honest, if I had money to burn instead of a Prius I would by this MB. Up to certain point we Prius owners are not saving that much of money due to the highest price of the Prius.

I feel like I'm going to do ok with my o6 Prius I recently purchased with 144k, for 5800.00
It's a one owner, no rust, and hedging by bets that it will do well for me for another 100k or 150k.
It is road worthy and has a recent new Dealer hybrid battery, I believe these cars are so reliable for the most part.
Plus I don't have to have the latest model.
I say I am saving money.
I know I own a Gen 2, but felt like when it come out of pocket a healthy gen2 can look pretty appealing .
I know some will say more can go wrong with an older Prius, but may not.
Old argument, but I like saving money for the moment.
Was at Dealer today for other reasons, sit in a Yaris, I meant Prius C, that will be my next car in 10 years.

That's the only way you save money in a Prius (buying a second hand one) beside driving it daily more than 100 miles.

Why is 100 miles a day a magic number ?

My back-of-the-envelope arithmetic says that just fuel savings per mile breaks even at about
    $3000/0.04 = 75,000 miles
