Did you ever experience the joys of a haggis supper or a pie supper when you were at the Holy Loch?

Ah. Well, yes, it could be the solution to everything, then.

She's not Northern English, she's near London. They like Minced Pies and very sweet stuff. She'll never run off without me, she's too paranoid I'll drive her Prius.

I thought only whiskey bottles (and 'personal' things) came wrapped in newspaper or brown-paper bags (wink, wink).

    ex-AT1(AC) here.

Ah. I hope she doesn't have that Southern English inability to cook thing going on.

One of my English friends in LA went to the Australian Rules Football exhibition match there a couple of years ago because he was so desperate for a decent meat pie.

The chips come that way (with a plain paper wrapper in between), but you have to supply your own bread. Ketchup optional. Mushy peas recommended as a side dish.

    YES!
I was even sober enough to actually enjoy them at times.
I used to eat Scottish Eggs at the place where we got the fish and chips - served PROPERLY, of course which is why I mentioned the newspaper earlier.

    Wikipedia is wrong.
All of Scottish eggs that I enjoyed were properly fried, NOT baked!

You've never lived a full and just life unless you've been hung over after a night of cider and fried food! :)
I've always thought that one of the many injustices in life was a lack of culinary street cred for food in the UK.

Catsup is very optional in fries....NOT on a chips sandwich!
You are right, as usual, about the white paper though! :)

White pudding suppers are bordering on the vegetarian. But they're probably not ideal for Chuck's health kick.

When we went to Glasgow and Dundee to visit my grandmothers, we'd always stop off at Lockerbie on the way home - it was the last place on the road South that deep-fried its scotch pies.

We'll be in Glasgow in April - wonder if they're still doing deep-fried Mars Bars?

Lots of good Indian food there, and the restaurants and pubs have been non-smoking for quite a few years now, something I never thought would happen in Scotland.

And, likewise for your service! I immediately recognized the ETC(SS), ie: Electronic Technician Chief, Submarine Service. My dad was ETC and electronics instructor at Treasure Island before he retired.

    Fixed the spelling for you!
Which in the book by Harry Harrison on which the film was loosely based (Make Room!, Make Room!), was *not* people, but, as the name suggests, a protein derived from soy and lentils.

He was quite annoyed by this and much else in the film at the time. But I guess he got paid.

    Home made potato burger.

Take a potato and cook it in the microwave.
Mash it in a bowl and add in spices. Salt, pepper. Maybe some rosemary, whatever.
Form the mashed potatoes into a burger-like patty shape.
Then cook it some oil on the stovetop.

Put it on a toasted bun with some lettuce and other burger-like toppings.

    YUM!

The chip butty, so British! I've tried it many times, but not a major fan. If you want to fill your stomach, it'll do it no problem. seriously filling

Yes, you'll have no problem getting them. And the great delicacy that is the deep-fried pizza is still widely available too, I'm told.

I haven't been back to Britain since 2005. I'm going to try and get over this year - I'd like to take my kids to meet all their relatives too. So we'll have to do the Blackpool area, and Glasgow, and Dundee, and Fife, and London, and a few other places. It should be a culinary adventure for them. They loved the food on their last two holidays, in China and Japan, so I'm sure they'll be open to deep-fried pies and black pudding too.

Glasgow's good for Indian food, but Grumpy Cabbie lives just outside Indian Food Paradise.

A pub I was in last night in Sydney is having a Brick Lane promotion next month, with chefs brought over from London. I think I may have to go.

Chuck, would black pudding count as a meat substitute? Strictly speaking, it's not meat. And it does make for a very good sandwich. I'm not convinced of the heart benefits, though.
