Wish list for next generation Prius Plug-in

    Here is my wish list for the next generation Prius Plug-in:

    1. Greater pure electric mode range (c'mon Toyota, you can do better than 13 miles)
    2. When you floor the accelerator in electric mode, it doesn't go into hybrid operation
    3. Reliability that matches the non-plug-in Prius
    4. With lithium-ion traction batteries anticipated for the regular Prius, the cost of Plug-in battery replacement goes down
    5. It keeps its single-occupant HOV access status.

    1. PiP release in Australia.
    2. Less of a price jump to purchase the PiP option. The increase on the US cars hardly seems worth it (excluding rebates)

    what about adding a spare tire, I'm sure the weight of ~40lb tire won't kill the range.

    Of course almost everyone wants this. But there is no magic. It will cost more. It will take up more cargo space. It will make the car heavier reducing both EV and HV efficiency

    Yes, this is a good idea.But then there is the other side of the equation...when you really floor it aren't you asking the car to accelerate as fast as it can? Why wouldn't you want it to use all propulsion means available to do this?

    Is there a noted difference?

    Sure, but the CA stickers will be long gone before a new PIP ships.

    What I want is a Toyota PIP with 40 mile EV range. I'll accept some trade offs. What I don't want is a pure EV, or a Volt.

    Just give me 6 more MPH speed to 70 in EV.

    • More EV power (for certain, maybe 70 MPG)
    • More EV range (I'm certain this will happen - if today's measured at 11 miles ev, we should see 20 or 21)
    • Next Gen Gas efficiency (duh this will happen, probably more on the lines of 54mpg average than 55 mpg)
    • Spare (might or might not happen)
    • Larger and larger trunk (I'm certain this will happen, but not more than 10% increase)
    • Cheaper (no, I think it'll be the same price or slightly cheaper. The new engine will be cheaper, supplies cheaper, but that's how tech works, better bigger badder but same price, at least until incentives run out...but the incentives are supposed to spark higher supplies - which will happen as Tesla is pushing for that megafactory for battiers)
    • Better interior - subjective but sure, it will be different
    • Better exterior - subjective but sure, it will be different, I'd say 20% different, if Gen 2 to Gen III was a 20% difference in exterior, I'd wager the same diff
    • Sunroof - I bet there would be a model with this a year or two after release
    • AWD - No I don't think this will happen, but there will be a plugin hybrid that has that later...
    • Did I miss anything? :p

    Run the fan to de-fog (not de-frost) the windshield without starting the ICE. Example: this morning it started to fog, opening the window part way made it go away. The fan would do that nicely without the ICE running.

    Yeah, the console switch is too close to the Park button. I use that a lot more than I use the one to go from EV to HV, so I have to look down sometimes to make sure I hit the right one.

    Like by this summer, at the rate they are going.:( This is not something the auto manufacturers can do anything about, as the limit on plug-in hybrid (green) decals is written into state law.

    From a parts guy perspective: Be careful what you wish for. Some of the older Toyota and Lexus vehicles had tan, gray, blue, black interiors. Over time, spare parts run out, and everything supersedes to black. Now you have a tan interior car with one black seatbelt, door handle, etc.

    You can already do that. You just have to set the temp to LO before the car is fully on. (Push start without foot on brake, turn on fan and change temp to LO).

    Definitely agree with need for a way to disable heat mode before turning on the fan (while car is running) to guarantee ICE won't start purely because of fan.

    I vote for electric defrost. I think that's one of biggest missing pieces that isn't that hard to fix.

    Finally, in EV mode and cold exterior temps, why am I forced to blow cold air at my feet just to defrost the window???
