I have noticed several posts regarding oilchanges, filters, etc. I was wondering if any of you could give some sound reasons for using either amsoil or mobil 1. Is one better than the other?

In many many discussions with motoring enthusiasts, the clear preffered brand is Amsoil. Of course this is just word of mouth with nothing to back it up.

I am planning on using Amsoil 5w-30 at my first change and from then on.

Obviously since it is on the AMSOIL website there is some question about its objectivily, however you might want to take a look at this page.

If you snoop - lurk - the "bobistheoilguy" site, in extended service the Amsoil oils will thicken quite a bit.

If I had to toss a coin to pick either Amsoil or Mobil 1, it would be literally a toss. The Mobil 1 is usually 1/2 the price. I've thought of using Amsoil HDD 5W-30 year round in my diesel tractor at the hobby farm, so I wouldn't have to change twice a year from Esso XD-3 15W-40 to Esso XD-3 0W-30.

I suggest you look at comparative used oil samples to determine which oil provides "better" results.

There is a website that tested amsoil and Mobil1 and after reading through their results I went with Mobil1. They were independant and unbiased. Here's the link, http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html. I've been using it since 10k.

I checked my oil today after 7500 miles and it is still amber colored and hasn't dropped at all still reads the same as the day of the oil change. I use three quarts which puts me in the middle of the range.

I have used Mobil 1 syn. oil for about 10 years and am very happy with it. I tend to stick with a brand that works well for my needs.

If Mobil were to follow extended drain intervals like amsoil has been promoting since 1972 millions upon millions of gallons of oil would be saved. In 2005 Mobil came out with a extended performance oil with a 15000 mile change interval and claims it's a new thing!
