Toyota recalling 1.9 million Prius cars

I already used the link in the above article and did a recall search with my VIN number. I don't think it effects PiP's, but just wanted to double check...

I entered mine (2012 base PiP) and same. "There are no open Safety Recalls or Special Service Campaigns for your vehicle."

Quite possible that their website may not be updated with the latest info :( According to the press release it says ".... all of the 1.9 million newest-generation Prius vehicles.... "

So, I guess we may still need to make that trip to service center.

The Service Writers at the dealership have an 800# we could call for information regarding the recall.

I called the dealership and they can only go by the VIN check which would say no recall needed.

I inputted the VIN for my 2012 PIP- "There are no open Safety Recalls or Special Service Campaigns for your vehicle."

I inputted the VIN for my former 2012 Prius Five (the car I traded in to get the PIP)- "This is an important Safety Recall. Please contact your authorized Toyota dealer and schedule an appointment to have this remedy performed as soon as possible."

So my 2012 PIP is not recalled, but my previous 2012 Prius Five is recalled.

I also tried but it said it could not find my PiP in the database and to call a garage.

    ------------------------------------
    Update:
Tried in the database with my VIN instead of registration and received this:

"We are pleased to confirm that your Toyota is not affected by any voluntary customer service campaigns or outstanding safety recalls and no further action is required."

The scenario for this recall sounds a lot like the one they had last year for the Highlander Hybrid (transistor damage in the inverter due to a software issue).

I have 2014 PiP. Built in Dec. of 2013.
I just checked mine through Toyota Recall Website.

I get "There are no open Safety Recalls or Special Service Campaigns for your vehicle."

Same for my 2012 PIP, no recall. Maybe the software defect is absent in the PIP's version.

Your dealer is probably wrong. Check your VIN at the recall site. I have not seen any PIP owner report that their PIP was affected.

dealer included my vin in the email. what makes you think they are wrong? they might have access to an updated data base. or you could be right, we'll find out one way or the other.

You have a lot more trust and faith in dealer competence and honesty than I do! No one who has checked a PIP VIN has reported being affected. There's no reason to believe your dealer knows something Toyota doesn't know. But have fun anyway!

nah, i don't trust them either. i certainly won't take it in until i know for sure. it's interesting tho, we've been thru a lot of toyota recalls, and this is the first time we've ever recieved an email. and the same day? maybe they sent them to all thier customers just to lure people in.

The point of you personally checking the Toyota site (that we are checking) is to see if "the Toyota site" is giving false negatives to all of us. If you 'know' your VIN is in the recall, and the Toyota site says it is not, then we cannot trust one of the sources. Then we need to figure which source has the correct info. The dealerships may well have a separate data base. THAT would be good to know!
    Thanks Bisco.

It's not clear how the dealer would benefit from this. These recalls are no charge to the owner, and if the VIN is not recognized by Toyota as part of the recall, the dealer isn't going to get paid for any work they do.

Unless they just blindly sent the e-mail to EVERY Prius owner in the specified model year range that is in their service database , not bothering to check the individuals VINs, assuming that ALL Prius models are effected.
